TAMPA - The air conditioner wasn't working, Hugo Santillan Esquitia told deputies. He was angry at his wife. And the baby was crying.
That's why he yanked his 6-month-old daughter out of her swing chair and tossed her onto a couch, causing brain swelling and bleeding from the right side of her skull, a criminal report affidavit says. The baby was taken to University Community Hospital, then airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital in critical condition, according to Hillsborough County sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway.
The trouble at 13402 Grand Prix Way started about 6:20 p.m. Friday, according to the affidavit.
Esquitia, 20, grabbed the baby by the head and tried pulling her out of the swing chair, deputies said. They said that when that didn't work, he picked her up and tossed her onto the couch.
Esquitia was charged with aggravated child abuse, a felony. He was in Orient Road Jail, with no bail set.
