TRINITY - Instead of just talking about overweight children, James P. Gills Family YMCA and All Children's Hospital decided to do something about it.
They are offering the summer program Fit4AllKids at the Gills YMCA, 8411 Photonics Drive. Registration continues through the first session Monday.
"Almost every day we come across another report in the media about the growing problem of overweight children and teens," the YMCA's Web site says. Go to www.allkids.org, click on "Events," then click on "Fit4AllKids" for June 16, for information.
Fit4AllKids is designed for children 8 to 12 years old, said program spokeswoman Kellie Gilmore.
The youngsters strive to do their best to reach goals for weight loss, with help from friends in the group. They also learn how to control their weight once they reach their goals. Physical activity is one of the keys.
The Aug. 4 class, for example, will be a healthful cooking class, "which is always a lot of fun," Gilmore said.
Every child in the program must have a physician referral. Financial assistance is available to families that qualify.
Classes are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Aug. 11.
"Our goal is to help children adopt and maintain a healthy weight and body size, and to be more active and fit," Gilmore said.
For information, contact Gilmore at (727) 767-6923 or gilmorek@allkids.org.
