INDIANAPOLIS - Troy Dumais has become the first diver to make the U.S. Olympic team this year.
Dumais completed a dominating performance in 3-meter springboard Saturday at the trials. The Californian will be making his third trip to the Olympics. He was sixth on springboard at Sydney and Athens.
Only the trials winner is awarded a spot on the team. Brandon native Chris Colwill will be favored for his first Olympic berth when the rest of the squad is named in Tennessee next month. Colwill, who is 60 percent deaf, was the runner-up.
"This is one of my best performances in a while so I'm really excited," Colwill said. "I feel confident about making the Olympic team in 3-meter springboard but you can never tell how they are going to decide who will make the team from the selection camp. I just have to try to do the same as I did today or better."
GYMNASTICS: Paul Hamm is going to his third Olympics, and he never had to do a routine.
The reigning Olympic gold medalist, who missed this week's trials with a broken hand, was selected for the U.S. team for the Beijing Games on Saturday, along with Jonathan Horton. The rest of the six-man team and/or a training squad will be announced today.
