GLOUCESTER, Mass. (AP) - The mayor of Gloucester, Mass. says there is no evidence a group of girls at the city's high school made a pact to become pregnant.
Mayor Carolyn Kirk emerged from a closed-door meeting with city, school and health leaders Monday and said there was no independent confirmation of any plan among the teens to get pregnant and raise their babies together.
Kirk said the principal who first said there was a pact was now "foggy in his memory" of how he heard the information.
This year, 17 girls have become pregnant, quadruple the typical number of girls who become pregnant at the school.
The principal, Joseph Sullivan, was not invited to Monday's meeting. He has not responded to repeated interview requests since a Time magazine article last week in which he said there was a pact.
