TAMPA - Lightning goaltender Marc Denis was placed on waivers Tuesday, the first step in the process to buy the netminder out of the final year of his contract.
Should Denis clear waivers by noon today, the team will pay him two-thirds of the $3 million left on the last year of his three-year deal, allowing the 30-year-old to become an unrestricted free agent. Tampa Bay will be assessed a $1 million salary-cap hit for the next two years for buying out the contract.
Acquired from Columbus for Fredrik Modin and goaltender Fredrik Norrena on June 30, 2006, Denis failed to live up to the expectations of stabilizing the Lightning's presence in goal. He was 18-23-2 in 54 appearances with Tampa Bay before he was sent to the minors in December, where he spent most of the remainder of the year.
