TAMPA - A parade of severe thunderstorms drenched the Tampa Bay area late Wednesday afternoon and scattered hail across Hillsborough County, Spring Hill and St. Petersburg.
A funnel cloud over Hillsborough was reported to the National Weather Service but there were no reports of a tornado touching down.
Storms moved across Pasco and into southern Hillsborough but soon engulfed Tampa and Brandon, sparking urban flood warnings.
The weather service received multiple reports of hail in Hillsborough that stretched from Brandon to Temple Terrace and Tampa. Most of the hail was about the size of a nickel.
In all, the weather service received 10 reports of hail from the public and trained weather spotters in Hillsborough.
Other reports of hail came from Spring Hill and downtown St. Petersburg.
Nearly every place in the Tampa Bay area received rain, but some of the heaviest fell in western Pasco and Hernando where radar estimates showed 2 to 4 inches.
A possible tornado was reported in Levy County, where the weather service also received a report of a man struck by lightning.
The weather service said there was a possibility of more rain during the night.
