This CGI-heavy spectacle from Roland "Independence Day" Emmerich presents dreadlocked hunter-gatherer (Steven Strait) forced to leave his idyllic life after his pretty lady (Camilla Belle) is kidnapped. The movie doesn't even pretend to be historically, zoologically or meteorologically accurate; even worse, there is no Raquel Welch cameo.

PG-13; 108 minutes

IN BRUGES **½

Celebrated Irish playwright Martin McDonagh ("The Beauty Queen of Leenane") wrote and makes his directorial debut with this dark, twisty tale of hit men (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) who are ordered to lie low in the titular tourist town after badly bungling an assignment. PG-13; 95 minutes

THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES **½

The latest big-screen adaptation ofpopular children's books successfully duplicates the standard formula: a spooky old house, a mysterious book (which must NOT be read under any circumstances), the advancing army of CGI beasties (goblins!) and a real-life family drama (the AWOL dad), the latter of which gets far less screen time than the fantastic stuff.
