ELLENTON - Now in its third year, Pathfinder Outdoor Education's Camp Wananame offers Pasco County's high school students the opportunity to learn about the issues that sometimes divide them.
"They learn how to become instruments for positive change to help unite their school's diverse community," a news release states.
This year's camp runs through Sunday at the Day-Spring Conference Center in Ellenton. High school students attend as campers and peer counselors.
There is no charge for students to attend. Most scholarship money is sponsored by the Pasco County School District. Pathfinder's goal is to raise funds so that all the students who want to attend are able to do so.
It costs more than $500 to send one student to camp for the week.
Campers begin the week with activities that challenge them to discover their own issues with different forms of prejudice - from racial to religious and gender to ethnic, the news release states.
Last year, Lauren Champagne of Wiregrass High School attended Camp Wananame as a camper.
"I find ways every day to impart knowledge to at least one person about lessons I learned at camp and the rewards of being open-minded," Champagne said in the news release.
Graduates of the weeklong Camp Wananame also host a Unity Day, funded by the school district, at their high school.
