Deputies say they have solved the case of the abandoned Ford Sport Trac truck which slammed into a Valrico utility pole early Thursday morning.

Turns out the truck was not stolen, as had been reported by its owner, deputies say.

It was the owner who crashed it, left it behind then called 911, according to a media release.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says its canine unit tracked the owner – Benjamin Patrick Frisk – from the accident scene to Frisk's house, according to the release, which gives the sheriff's office's version of what happened.

Deputy Charles Perdomo and his dog, Deuce, a 2 1/2 year old German shepherd, were sent to the truck, which had crashed on Erin Brooke Drive in Valrico. The driver had slammed into a utility pole about 2:30 a.m. and left it there. Witnesses reported seeing another vehicle stop and try to assist the driver. Frisk walked to his friend's home, then left and called 911 to report that his truck had been stolen.

Perdomo and Deuce tracked Frisk's scent through a subdivision and to the front door of a residence on Beth Ann Street in Valrico. Witnesses at the house told deputies about what had happened at the crash scene. Deputies located the suspect at his home on Lake Woodberry Road and arrested him.

Frisk, 25, was charged with making a false police report, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report damage due to a crash.

He was released on $750 bond, according to jail records.
