The following chronicles the short lives of eight other infants who died after showing signs of necrotizing enterocolitis and being treated at Tampa General Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The information is based on court papers filed by the parents.
Baby Gardner
07/26/03 - Baby Gardner born at Regency Medical Center in Winter Haven.
08/01/03 - Develops swollen abdomen.
08/03/03 - Feedings discontinued and condition later improves.
08/14/03 - Shows signs and is determined to have necrotizing enterocolitis, NEC; is transported to Tampa General after told baby would receive surgical consult.
08/15/03 - Condition worsens.
08/17/03 - Baby Gardner dies.
Baby Saiyed
03/07/04 - Baby Saiyed born.
03/10/04 - Shows swollen abdomen but later improves.
03/22/04 - Shows signs of NEC; is transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital for surgical consult but waits two hours before a surgeon is available.
03/26/04 - Baby Saiyed dies.
Baby Holmes
04/10/04 - Baby Holmes born.
04/21/04 - Begins vomiting.
04/22/04 - Diagnosed with NEC.
04/23/04 - Baby Holmes is transferred for surgical consult at St. Joseph's Regional Hospital and dies.
Baby Hicks
08/20/04 - Baby Hicks born in Bartow Memorial Hospital and transferred to Tampa General.
09/18/04 - Shows signs of NEC.
09/25/04 - Transferred to All Children's Hospital for surgery to remove large portion of intestines.
09/18/05 - After suffering long-term complications and two five-organ transplant surgeries at another hospital, Baby Hicks dies.
Babies Hernandez
08/31/04 - Baby Boy and Baby Girl Hernandez born at Spring Hill Regional Hospital.
08/31/04 - Both transferred to Tampa General.
09/13/04 - Baby Boy Hernandez shows signs of NEC.
09/14/04 - Baby Boy Hernandez dies.
09/29/04 - Baby Girl Hernandez shows signs of NEC.
10/05/04 - Baby Girl Hernandez transferred to All Children's Hospital for unrelated cardiology surgical consult; determined to be in emergent need of abdominal surgery because of NEC and dies.
Baby Reed
09/01/04 - Baby Reed born.
09/23/04 - Shows signs of NEC.
09/25/04 - Baby Reed dies.
Baby Bednarski
10/11/04 - Baby Bednarski born.
10/28/04 - Shows signs of feeding intolerance and distended abdomen.
10/29/04 - Shows signs of NEC.
10/30/04 - Listed as suffering NEC, staff notes abdomen is discolored, blood in diaper and dripping from corner of mouth.
11/03/04 - Transferred to All Children's Hospital for consult, but judged too ill to survive.
11/22/04 - Baby Bednarski dies.
Baby Young
10/26/04 - Baby Young born.
11/02/04 - Shows signs of intestinal perforation.
11/08/04 - Baby Young dies.
