SHADY HILLS - SHADY HILLS - Covanta Pasco, which runs the county's waste-to-energy incinerator at Hayes Road, has received recognition for going "above and beyond" required environmental standards.
The state Department of Environmental Protection admitted Covanta into its National Environmental Performance Track, a program that encourages environmental improvement through community outreach.
Members include corporations, small businesses and public facilities throughout the United States.
Covanta Pasco and the Pasco County Solid Waste Resource Recovery Facility, which opened in 1991, burn about 1,050 tons of trash per day, generating 31.2 megawatts of electricity that is sold to Progress Energy.
The facility uses effluent from a nearby wastewater treatment plant as part of its water supply.
Company officials also participate in community cleanups and other efforts to improve the environment.
The county commission honored Covanta on Tuesday in New Port Richey.
