BOYETTE – A few hot spots remain this afternoon, but local and state firefighters have extinguished a brush fire near the Alafia River Park that had burned about 500 acres since Saturday night.
The fire initially was reported about 8:30 p.m. It appears that lightning started the brush fire, authorities said.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue officials say the blaze was in an isolated area and did not threaten any structures.
Hillsborough sheriff's deputies on Saturday night placed fog/smoke signs on State Road 39, warning motorists to be cautious because smoke was limiting visibility, firefighters said.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and the state's Division of Forestry were staged near Thatcher Road.
As of this morning, no injuries had been reported and no evacuations were planned.
