CLEARWATER - Four people and a cat escaped injury when a fire started this afternoon at a two-story house, Clearwater Fire & Rescue officials said.

Firefighters responded to the call about 2:40 p.m. and saw smoke and flames coming from the house at 2029 Douglas Avenue. Crews had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes.

The flames were contained where they started—a bedroom on the first floor, authorities said. Damage is about $20,000 and investigators said the cause of the fire was electrical.

The house, which was heavily damaged by smoke, is divided into two units with an entrance downstairs and another on the second floor. When firefighters entered the second floor, a cat escaped from the building, officials said.
