PINELLAS PARK Police officers responded to a call of gunfire early this morning, but witnesses said it was just teens setting off fireworks. An hour later a man showed up at an area hospital with gunshot wound he said he got at the initial location.
The victim, Errick Pholone Lovan, 18, Kenneth City, had undergone surgery and was expected to recover, Pinellas Park police said.
Officers initially got a call around 3 a.m. today of multiple gunshots in the 7300 block of U.S. 19, but people in the area told them the gunfire had really been fireworks.
Shortly before 4 a.m., police got a call from a local hospital that a patient had come in with a gunshot wound to his leg. The victim said he had been wounded during a confrontation with several young men in the area of 74th Avenue and 35th Way. His brother was with him and drove him to the hospital, police said.
Officers were continuing their search for the shooter, who remained unidentified this morning.
