Employees of a pet store found shards of broken glass today outside the business and assumed the worst.
"Someone broke in in the middle of the night and stole a few of our puppies," said Ryan Julian, store manager of All About Puppies in Tampa. A headcount revealed 10 puppies missing.
The burglary at the pet store, 13705 N. Dale Mabry Highway, occurred between 6:10 and 6:15 a.m., Hillsborough County sheriff's spokeswoman Vida Morgan said.
All of the puppies, worth a total of $13,000, were of a toy breed except for one cocker spaniel.
Julian worries that the stolen puppies may be sold for a cheap price to those who are "willing to take a dog that they don't have papers on."
Julian is concerned for the safety of the missing puppies. "The really distressing part of it is that they took a lot of very, very small dogs that if they're not fed properly it can actually be fatal for them."
Two of the puppies are less than two pounds and need to be hand-fed.
Jullian says that he and his employees just want to "get the dogs back, whatever it takes."
Anyone with information should call the sheriff's office at (813) 247-8200 or, to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477.
