The state, on Tuesday, is coming out with the SunPass Mini, a credit-card-sized transponder that sticks to windshields.
At $4.99, it never needs batteries and is less costly than regular SunPass transponders that retail at $24.99. To sweeten the deal, the state is offering $4.99 worth of free tolls with each Mini purchase.
So why hang on to your old SunPass? The Mini has a few minor drawbacks:
It doesn't beep or light up when passing through toll booths and it can't be moved to another vehicle once stuck to the windshield.
Still, Florida's Turnpike Enterprise says the Mini will appeal to part-time Florida residents and others who don't want to shell out $25 for a transponder. Existing customers might make the switch so they don't have to worry about changing the batteries.
SunPass customers should update their accounts before switching to a Mini. Call 1-888-865-5352. The sticker is on sale at toll booths and at Publix and CVS stores.
