Whoopi Goldberg says her friend Patrick Swayze - who recently was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer - is the reason she won an Oscar for "Ghost."
"When I won my Academy Award, the only person I really thanked was Patrick," Goldberg recalled Thursday on ABC's daytime talk show "The View."
Goldberg, who starred alongside Swayze in the 1990 film, earned a best supporting actress trophy for her portrayal of psychic Oda Mae Brown, who helps slain businessman Sam Wheat (Swayze) communicate with his grieving fiancee and solve the mystery of his murder.
The 52-year-old actress-comedian said Swayze persuaded director Jerry Zucker to cast her in the film amid "some resistance." According to Goldberg, Swayze said, "I'm not making this movie unless you put Whoopi Goldberg in there."
Fey, Poehler Movie To Open Film Festival
The Tribeca Film Festival, held in New York, is turning to the local talent of "Saturday Night Live" to open this year's event.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's "Baby Mama" will open Tribeca with its world premiere on April 23, the festival announced Wednesday. The seventh annual festival will run through May 4.
"Baby Mama" stars Fey, a former "SNL" head writer and performer, and Poehler, a current cast member. It's produced by "SNL" creator Lorne Michaels and was written and directed by Michael McCullers, a former writer for the sketch comedy show.
"As a film festival with a true commitment to New York City and its film community, what better way to open this year's festival than with a New York production that brings together some of the city's most beloved and creative talent," said festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal.
Rosenthal founded the film fest with Robert De Niro and entrepreneur Craig Hatkoff after the Sept. 11 attacks to help rejuvenate lower Manhattan.
Spears' Estate Ordered To Pay Her Father
Being Britney Spears' father is now a paying gig - through most of the summer, at least.
A court has ordered the pop star's estate to pay James Spears $2,500 in weekly compensation and authorized him to lease a car. On Wednesday, his authority to handle his daughter's affairs, which was set to expire Monday, was extended until July 31.
Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz ordered the weekly payments in documents released by the court Thursday but signed on Wednesday.
Goetz also ordered Spears' estate to make a $58,800 payment to Samuel D. Ingham III, the court-appointed attorney who represents Britney Spears in the conservatorship case. She also authorized the pop star's psychiatrist to hire two other doctors and pay them retainers totaling $9,000 from her estate.
