Q105 DJ "Marvelous" Marvin Boone was beaten up Saturday night outside a St. Pete Beach hotel, where he was working a wedding reception.

Boone had just moved his car after unloading equipment and was heading back to the Dolphin Beach Resort, 4900 Gulf Blvd., about 5:40 p.m.

"I saw this man leaning up against the hotel talking on a cell phone," Boone said. "I walked past him, and as I got closer to the hotel he got next to me and just punched me."

Boone said a heavyset man in his 30s or 40s walked up behind him and punched him twice in the left eye, then left in a blue pickup.

Boone, 52, said he was knocked to the ground but refused to cancel the booking.

He said he went through with the wedding gig because he didn't want to ruin the bride and groom's night. The guests seemed happy with his performance and helped him load up his gear when he was done, he said.

"Except for a nasty poke in the eye, it was a perfect night," said Boone, who's worked as a disc jockey at WRBQ, 104.7 FM, in St. Petersburg, since May 2000. Despite his badly swollen eye, he went on the air Sunday. However, Boone said he could feel his head throbbing driving home after work.

"It's just now starting to sink in," he said.

Boone said he can't imagine why he was targeted. He said police told him the attack might have been designed to disrupt the wedding.

"He never said a word, and I had never seen him before," Boone said. "I felt like I was on an episode of 'The Wire.'"

The St. Pete Beach Police Department is looking for the attacker but did not provide many details about the investigation Sunday. The attacker's vehicle was described as a blue Dodge Ram 1500.

Detectives are expected to pick up a copy of surveillance footage today from the resort.

Anyone with information is asked to call (727) 363-9200.
