Two Polk County Sheriff's Office detention deputies and an Auburndale woman have been charged with smuggling marijuana to a jail inmate.
Deputies Michael T. Redmond, 23, and Jarrett R. Brice, 35, resigned after being arrested Thursday night, sheriff's office spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said.
This is what happened, according to the affidavits:
Redmond, who has been a detention deputy since March 2007 and was assigned to the south county jail, delivered marijuana to inmate Freddie "Tryes" Street six times. The marijuana was given to Redmond by Street's girlfriend, Latifah Bilal, 25, of 417 Century Blvd., Auburndale.
Bilal would send cell phone text messages to Redmond to arrange the handoff, and recorded jail phone calls between Bilal and Street confirmed the inmate had received the drugs.
Brice, who had been a detention deputy since April 2002 and was assigned to the visitation area at the jail, would alter the visitation transaction logs so Bilal could visit Street more than detention regulations allow. Fellow deputies saw Brice altering the logs and reported the changes to supervisors. Brice also alerted Bilal and Street to the investigation once it began in February, the affidavits state.
Bilal is charged with introduction of contraband into a detention facility and criminal intent to conspire.
Redmond is charged with six counts of introduction of contraband into a detention facility.
Brice is charged with introduction of contraband into a detention facility, official misconduct, disclosure-use of confidential criminal justice information and criminal intent to conspire.
