TAMPA - Mary Jo Spack met two Freedom High School students March 14 and took them to a liquor store, police said Thursday.
Mary Jo Spack
Spack, an honors English teacher at Freedom, then drove the students, ages 17 and 18, to a Howard Johnson motel on Fowler Avenue where they drank alcohol together, an arrest report states.
"Those kids were texting some friends that they were going to have a party at this motel," police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said. Three other students joined them in the motel room, McElroy said.
The 17-year-old told police he had sex with Spack in the shower.
"The other students who were in the hotel room overheard the sex act in the bathroom," McElroy said.
Spack, 45, of Wesley Chapel, was arrested Thursday at Freedom High. She is charged with one count of unlawful sex with a minor and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
A teacher heard a student talking about the incident earlier this week and reported it to Freedom's administration, Hillsborough County School District spokesman Steve Hegarty said.
Spack was not the students' teacher, police said.
Allegations 'Shocking Every Time'
She is the second Hillsborough County teacher within a week accused of having sex with a student. Middle school math teacher Stephanie Ragusa was arrested March 13 and accused of having sex with a 14-year-old at least three times from January to May 2007. Ragusa, 28, was released from jail Tuesday after posting $12,500 bail.
Spack was released from Orient Road Jail at 8:26 p.m. Thursday after posting $8,500 bail. A phone call to the Spacks' home was not returned Thursday night.
"It's still shocking every time," Hegarty said Thursday about the recent teacher arrests. "The schools are shocked. We're shocked."
Spack was suspended with pay Thursday, Hegarty said. She will be sent a letter from the school board informing her not to go to work. She also faces the possibility of being suspended without pay pending a vote by the school board, Hegarty said.
Spack was hired in 2000 to teach English, speech and drama at Chamberlain High School, according to her application to the school district.
"My philosophy of education has grown and matured into what is now a strong desire to create in my students the aspiration to become life-long learners," Spack wrote in her application.
She transferred to Freedom in 2004, Hegarty said. District officials will examine her personnel records today.
Students Surprised By Arrest
Students at Freedom told a reporter on Thursday they were surprised at Spack's arrest.
"I thought it was for something else," student Shaakier Johnson said. "I didn't think she was actually having sex with kids. I thought maybe she didn't pay her taxes."
Spack interned at Land O' Lakes High School in 2000 and was supervised by teacher Tanya Fuss, who said Thursday she only worked with Spack and did not know her well. Fuss said the arrests of Spack and Regusa were disturbing.
"I'm horrified to hear that yet another teacher is accused," Fuss said.
Spack was arrested by Pasco County sheriff's deputies in 1994 on a charge of driving with a suspended or revoked license, Florida Department of Law Enforcement records show. She pleaded no contest and paid $105 in court costs. Information about her arrest was included in her application to the school district.
Prior to her arrest Thursday, Spack had no other misdemeanor or felony criminal records in Pasco or Hillsborough counties, records show.
Spack graduated summa cum laude from the University of South Florida in May 2000 with a bachelor's degree in secondary English education, according to her resume. Before she was a teacher, Spack worked in hotels and restaurants in Texas, Tennessee and Florida, she wrote in her resume.

Save the fuel cost's, save the so called personel cost's, SAVE YOUR KIDS from sex with their teachers and CUT MY PROPERTY TAXES by the same 40%. This joke called education is a BAD ECONOMY OF SCALE!

Three of my kids have had Mrs. Spack for English Honors and loved her. Two graduated from Chamberlain and the 9th grader has her this year at Freedom. She has been a terrific caring teacher who actually emails you if you child is having trouble in her class. I have spoken with her several times and this just does not sound like her. I hope the report is false. Even so, I am sure that she made some very wrong decisions in getting a hotel room and allowing drinking with those who are underage. I personally would give her the benefit of the doubt.

Well Stephanie Ragusa is too pretty to go to jail anyway because other inmates would prey on her. So what we should do is just prosecute this teacher since she is "less attractive" and send her to prison, thus cutting the cost of trying both of them and saving the court system 50% of the funds they would have had to pay to bring them both to court. I have solved two of the state's problems in 30 seconds. VOTE 4 ME!!!

Ever notice the punishment for male teachers having sex with students is a little harsher than when a female teacher has sex with a student.
Is it discrimination or is it morally acceptable for female teachers to commit the exact same crime?

It is amazing. If she wasn't a teacher this would not be publicized to this extent. I realize teachers are held to a higher moral standard than most of society, however what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty. Kids do lie. In both teachers cases if these things are not true their lives are ruined. It really is ridiculous that people who commented are so negative about our school system. The system is not corrupt because of our teachers it is corrupt because of our government. You should focus that aggression towards the people who really have control. And... try being a teacher for just one day. I guarantee most of you would change your attitude, and value teachers a little more.....

namvet65, you are right, if these women were men, they would be in prison, and the public would be outraged if they got anything less, but you gotta remember these are teenage boys, you can't rape the willing. I don't get it myself, how much pleasure can a woman in her 40's get from a 17 year old boy. She lost her career, and probably her freedom over sex that probably lasted 10 seconds, I hope it was worth it to her. She has to be desperate.

Roxy, I'm not sure if you're criticizing the comments on the story, or TBO for reporting it.
I'm not going to speak for anyone on here, but they're entitled to their opinions. And TBO is obligated to report when a teacher is accused of having sex with a student.
As for this lady, I do have to say that of course she was wrong to be lusting after a seventeen year old kid, but if anyone thinks that this kid is going to "suffer" from this, you're crazy! He might suffer if all of his friends find out he was having sex with this hag, because folks, let's face it.......She's not too pretty for prison.

IT SOUNDS VERY ALARMING, AND IF IT IS TRUE SHE SHOULD BE PUNISHED. HOWEVER, STUDENTS LIE ALL THE TIME. THEY BAND TOGETHER TO AVOID THEIR OWN PUNISHMENT OR TO TAKE REVENGE ON A TEACHER FOR THEIR OWN EGOTISTICAL REASONS.
I HAVE HAD STUDENTS DO THAT TO ME. IT CAME OUT THAT THEY WERE ALL LYING, BUT IT WAS STILL VERY PAINFUL WHEN I WAS GOING THROUGH IT, AND THE PARENTS BELIEVED EVERYTHING THEIR KIDS SAID, AND THEN THEY WENT ONTO TELL OTHERS THE LIES. SO BE CAREFUL AND WAIT TO JUDGE ANYONE UNTIL IT IS PROVEN BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT.
I WILL BE LEAVING THE TEACHING PROFESSION FOR THESE REASONS. I HAVE NO POWER. AT ANY ONE MOMENT A TEEN CAN MAKE UP A STORY, GET OTHERS TO JOIN IN, AND GET THEIR PARENTS INVOLVED. YOUR LIFE CAN BE RUINED IN A BLINK OF AN EYE.

JessieC, here is my "developed argument".....You said it was "stupid, superficial and insensitive", so I will address each verb you used. Stupid: is the person that would come on here and even in a round about way stick up for this woman, even if it is for her appearance. Superficial: We're only saying what most people are thinking when they see her picture and lets face it, this is a superficial world we live in. Insensitive: I'm sorry to offend your overly sensitive feelings, but I didn't know that we should be mandated to consider a woman's feelings that would (allegedly)have sex w/one of her students after (allegedly)providing alcohol to same underage kid.
You're funny, Jessie. Have you been visiting tbo long?

You folks have some big problems with your schools/teachers there! I can't believe how many times I've read this same story out of FL and Tampa seems to be a favorite. Male/female pretty/unpretty-doesn't matter and has nothing to do with the issue at hand. These teachers are preying on our children and need to be stopped. I'm reading in the article that officials are "horrified" and "surprised" that this has occurred yet again. Why? Why are they horrified and surprised?! They have ALLOWED it to happen yet again. Look at LaFave. These offenders are not penalized by the system-they are pampered along and glorified in the media!

marymcq - You made a similar statement for the last hoe-bag teacher.
Only then it was, "It was probably over before she got her pants down."
Twice you've insulted the victims and called them the "willing." Twice you've made sarcastic remarks about them being too quick.
Are these perverts to be excused becuase the first victim didn't last long enough for the pedophile to get her pants off?
Should this nauseating wreck of a pedophile walk because of your disgusting comment about him?
If it were a girl, would she be the "hot-girl" on campus, (you implied in the Ragusa case that that victim would be the "big-man" on campus).
What you don't quite get is that any child under 18 should not have their teachers paws on them. What you are too dense to grasp is that they are victims and by speaking of them in such disgusting terms, you are siding with the perp. But, I guess in your narrow view, they're not girls so they are not victims.

Some of you people are just plain stupid.
My own students could tell you that in our legal system a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Yes, kids do lie and back up others who lie. Yes mom and dad, even your own kid.
If she is guilty of this crime she should be punished but in the eyes of the law, she is still innocent.

What is fascinating to me is how at least 75% of the female teachers involved in this type of activity are attractive, and in many cases, real attractive. I'm not saying this because of LaFAVE, it's because that is how it happens. Nationally, it's the same way. Obviously, this isn't one of the cases where the teacher is attractive, but care to take a shot as to why most teachers engaging in this activity are?
Is it because women who are attractive are taught by society that their LOOKS is what defines them, and what men crave, therefore they become insecure and need that type of physical attention? Or is it because most teens won't hook up with an unattractive teacher, therefore it typically only happens to the attractive ones?
C"MON PEOPLE, POST YOUR OPINIONS HERE.

Eloquentmind has a point. Don't assume you really know what went on. It has happened many times, and will continue to happen, that some students will go out of their way to get rid of their teacher or cause trouble for them. When a teacher is accused of something of this nature, just the accusation pretty much ends their career. I'm not saying that this teacher is guilty or innocent, just don't assume that you know what really happened.

joeyg, If we post our opinions, according to taylorcold, we are "self righteous morons". And according to JessieC we would be "stupid, superficial and insensitive", and have the need to "grow a brain and come up with a developed argument".
Screw them.
For those of you saying that she is innocent until proven guilty, that is correct (in a court of law). In the court of public opinion, she is whatever most people think, until proven otherwise, guilty or innocent. Both courts screw up, but my experience is that the court of public opinion is usually dead on. This woman was not arrested based solely on the word of the students.

All teachers that sleep with their students need to go to prison, and I could care a less what the child or teacher look like, I was stating that these women who do this wreck their life over something that isn't worth it. Men do the same thing, I just didn't put that in, because if you could read, this story is about a woman. Besides, how would you look in a mugshot after crying all day, not wearing your makeup, and you can't see anything because your glasses are not on? She's actually a very cute lady. I am in her class, and I am 98% sure she didnt do this. Its not her style, she is too good of a person to have done this. she is just too nice, if you got introuble with the APs at school she would be there in an instant to try and help you out, if you are having trouble understanding something she will explain it to you 10000 times, she was also the person to go to if your having family/friend/boyfriend problems and just needed to talk or some advice. her classroom was like a home, where we are all a family. And dont attack my views on her being nice because she has a very loving family and has been in a happy marriage for 15 yrs and she always loves to talk about her husband, she calls him "the man who changed my life". she is a very important person to all of her students, and we are having a tough enough time dealing with our own parents negativity towards our favorite teacher, and everyones rude and mean comments are not helping.

Why are teachers engaging in more and more improper relations with students? They know the difference between right and wrong, yet they burn with desire for the forbidden. Most of the teachers accused of these crimes are very attractive, and very capable of finding relationships outside of school. Legitimate relationships with peers are not forbidden, and therefore not exciting enough to interest them. These teachers are victims of a desensitized society.

I consider myself a pretty 'hip' not easily offended or shocked by the actions of others kind of person. But, since I became a parent 7 years ago it seems like our teachers have lost their (minds) dedication to the children and well being of the future of the US. When I was growing up I'm sure there were such things going on, girls with crushes on teachers and visa versa (graduated HS in 86) and I was pretty in tune to what was going on and I think the worst thing was teachers drinking/partying with students. Never anything that crossed the boundries of the teach student relationshop. I want to believe my kids are 'safe and not being preyed upon' by their teachers, people they look up to. I dont care how old the age gap is for adults, but when I have to fear if my child is getting seduced or if my child is the one flirting (isnt that what we do when were kids have crushes on our teachers) to actually think that his teacher would step over the boundries for whatever reason.. Shame on the teachers...16- 17- 18 year olds are experiencing sex with there with others of the same age group..maybe at the most a Freshman with a Senior...whoooo! Not with the people they look up to and should feel safe around.
