Another Local Educator Accused Of Sex With A Minor

NEW PORT RICHEY -- Another Tampa Bay area educator is accused of having sex with a minor.

Substitute teacher Lisa Robyn Marinelli, 40, was arrested Monday and charged with unlawful sex with a minor, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said. She also is accused of giving the 17-year-old boy a pair of her underwear as a memento of their sexual relationship, sheriff's spokesman Kevin Doll said.

The boy's father told investigators that he saw his son "holding his pants together and putting them back in place" after exiting Marinelli's 2007 Chrysler 300 on Feb. 27, sheriff's spokesman Kevin Doll said.

Communication between Marinelli and the boy began in January, when the boy was 16, records state. It was unclear how Marinelli met the boy.

"The victim's father provided documents of hundreds of cell phone calls, and there were about 35 text messages still on the victim's cell phone," Doll said. "One of the messages asks, 'How about a quickie 2morrow afternoon?'

Lisa Robyn Marinelli

"Other messages invite the victim to her home 'because real men only need 20 minutes,'" he said.

The boy showed investigators several locations where he said he had sex with Marinelli in her vehicle, Doll said. Under Florida law, a 17-year-old cannot consent to sex with a person 24 and older.

The boy told investigators that he had sex with Marinelli 10 times between Jan. 12 and Feb. 27, an affidavit stated. Most of the sexual encounters took place in Marinelli's car at several locations in and around the Longleaf community.

A business address on Marinelli's arrest report is that of Mitchell High School on Little Road in New Port Richey. It was not immediately known whether Marinelli, of 9824 Nicklaus Drive, had worked at other schools in the county. She has no previous arrest history, records show.

Marinelli was being held at the Land O' Lakes Jail on Monday night with bail set at $20,000.

Pasco school district officials did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment and an assistant principal at Mitchell High declined to comment.

A woman who answered the phone at Marinelli's address Monday evening said that neither Lisa Marinelli nor her husband, Brian, were available to comment.

Marinelli is the third Bay area teacher to be charged recently with a sex-related crime against a minor. In Hillsborough County, former Davidsen Middle School math teacher Stephanie Ragusa and Freedom High English teacher Mary Jo Spack, of Wesley Chapel, face recent charges of having unlawful sex with underage students.

Since 2005, at least 10 schoolteachers in Hillsborough and neighboring counties have been arrested on similar charges.

In January, Michael Black, a former music teacher and band director at Pasco Middle School, pleaded guilty to three counts of lewd and lascivious battery, a second-degree felony. This month, he was sentenced to more than 221/2 years in prison, followed by 10 years of strict sexual offender probation.

Doll said there was no indication that Marinelli had other possible victims.

"But if anybody has information about other victims we need to talk to them," he said.

Anyone with information may call the sheriff's office at 1-800-854-2862.

The father of the boy told investigators that he saw his son "holding his pants together and putting them back in place" If the boy was black this would be normal behavior as he was just grabbing his crotch to keep his pants up. Otherwise my comment is as follows: Just about a year ago everyone was coming down on men as being pedophiles. Being against men seemed to be the fad. But now, the latest has proven that females are just as capable as being pedophiles as men are. The percentages are still more men than females but they are narrowing quickly because more females are being caught. Females have a longer history of grooming their victims due to their nurturing ways which is easier for women than men. Otherwise known in the psyschological world as grooming. Maybe someday the public will wake up and realize that females are just as capable as males at this type of behavior.

Perhaps it's time to have all Florida "educators" take, "Read the Daily Newspaper." When I was a child inappropriate activity between a teacher and a student was a rare occurrance. Today, inappropriate activity between a teacher and a student is a rare occurrance. Didn't any of these "teachers" read a newspaper during the last six months?

beatcowboy I hate to bust your bubble but only one in ten sex crimes are ever reported. This means that the teacher sex scandles are ten times more than those that are reported. And it may be higher as only one in 59 rapes are reported. And make no doube a teacher having sex be it male or female with a child under the age of consent is rape or as we like to call it here in Florida is sexual battery.

Sad when this is becoming an epidemic. If all the 3 latest women are guilty, they each should get the same sentence as Michael Black. It doesn't matter if the victims are male or female, or the perpetrators are male, female, good-looking or otherwise. Double standards should not exist. We women have been screaming inequality for years, we want equal treatment. Soooooo, also criminal offenders that are female should get the EXACT same treatment as male offenders.

Toss their lawbreaking butts in jail and apply the legal same standard as men, like they are supposed to do; where is it written in written law prohibiting sex with a minor that WOMEN get OFF easy? This is a patently sexist misapplication of well established law. Punishment is designed to deter crime, not reward those that commit the crime. DUH.

All teachers should have a good psycological exam before being allowed to teach the children and leave the sex education to the parents not the school.
If I had a school age child I would home school him/her.

Consensual sex is consensual. Drop the criminal charges unless the minor is under the age of puberty.

I bet with a good lawyer this teacher will 'get off'. No pun intended.

The law is illegal in allowing someone up to age 24 to have consensual sex with a 17 year old young man, but making it a crime if you are 25 or older. That is just plain age discrimination.

And quit calling someone a pedophile unless they 'get off' by having sex with pedos(children), which by definition can be only those under the age of puberty.

A 17 year old male is a young man, not a pedo.

This is disgraceful. What I am not surprised at is, as usual, Rick Mellin has no comment. Does the man realize there is not a student in the school that carries an ounce of respect for him?

I'm convinced he is a figment of the imagination. He never answers an e-mail or a phone call and when his students need him to speak out on an outrageous event such as this, he is no where to be found.

It seems more than the teachers need to be held accountable for behavior within a school.

This is a sad situation. I feel very sorry for this woman's family and for the boy and his family. If this is true, it's a case of a confused woman connecting with a highly hormonal young man. I am not using this as an excuse but I see and hear these kids all the time. They are so much more physically mature than when I was a teen back in the late 70's. Sex is a game, a source of fun for them. Parents aren't parenting anymore. Kids aren't afraid of consequences at all.

There is absolutely no excuse for why Mrs. Marinelli ever put herself in a position to be inappropriate with a student. She should have known better and thought of her kids and husband first. She never should have chosen to be alone with any boy for any reason. It's called self-control. Something sorely lacking in many kids as well.

When this all blows over, the boy will move on and the "hot substitute" will be among the notches in his belt. No doubt, she was not his first. Her life and the lives of her husband and kids, however, will be ruined to some degree. I really wish all people, kids in particular, would show more care and respect for themselves by keeping their pants on. Kids need to keep them on until they are mature enough to deal with a sexual relationship.

Seriously, I happen to care very much about these kids. It hurts me more than I can say to see stuff like this happen. I hope we all remember that there are other people being affected by this news. Please have some thought for this woman's kids. This must be very difficult for them.

This is very interesting. This boy has been with this teacher about 10 times and now the father finds out. If this boy had committed a serious crime such as murder, armed robbery, etc. he would be tried and convicted as an adult. Prosecuters would preach that he knew what he was doing and that he must pay for his actions. Something needs to be done about these almost adults having sex (MULTIPULE TIMES) and the adult being ruined. The young people need to be accountable and responsible for their actions also. If a crime was committed, the talk would not be "poor little Johnny made a mistake". But try Johnny as an adult and off to prison he goes. Now tell me, who is going to protect him in prison from rape? Nobody, just bend over, shut up, and wait till you're free to go home. As a dad myself I understand that our children need protection. I also remember the day when I was 17 and if I had a similar opportunity, I would have taken advantage of it too. If a 13 year old can be tried as an adult then the laws should be changed when an older teen in his or her right mind consents to engage in sex. Did not the dad have a clue that his son was sexually active?
If it had been with an 18 year girl I wonder what would the dad's reaction have been.

CPJR - If the queen had testicles, she would be the king. This is not an 18 year old girl.

This is a teacher, someone who parents trust to guide our children. Wondering doesn't solve anything.

This is not Wisteria Lane, and our children deserve better than to come out of school to face reporters.

Not to mention this woman has a daughter that attends classes at the same school.

Not only did she violate a code of conduct, how could any parent be so selfish?

The "What IF" mentality has to stop. This woman needs to serve time in jail.

lstgrps I doubt having seperate sex schools would solve the problem as some of the teachers in past news have been charged with same sex violations.

At the age of 17 a person is old enough to join the military and go into combat. I would think that if he is mature enough for that one can not say the government considers him to be a child. I agree that she, if guilty, violated the law. I think the law is outdated for our society but regardless at this point in time it is illegal.

The inequities between the sentences handed out to males versus females or for that matter "pretty" teachers versus "plain" teachers is, in my view, criminal as are the sentences of the rich versus the poor but we as citizens allow it to continue.

This is where things really get blurry.

First, all of these teachers should be fired. Not question. They crossed a line and should certainly have a career change forced upon them.

Criminal charges is a little tougher for me. 18 is a great place to draw a line, but from the opposite point of view. Sex between any two people 18 and up is legal. Below that line, circumstances really need to be taken into account. These 16 and 17 year olds are clearly consenting to this, and these don't seem to be cases of "sleep with me or you fail", which should be treated as a crime immediately. These actually seem to be relationships, though in a very odd sense of the word.

Inadvisable and inappropriate? certainly? Criminal? I'm just not convinced. And yes, I feel the same way no matter the gender. Young woman can be just as hormonal and just as will ing as young men.

I have a solution for all of this underage sex business. All of these hot older women need a place to find young men who are 18. Some of them obviously have some kind of attraction to these young guys, and they should have a way to express it. I understand some of it comes with that teacher-student bond that has been around for thousands of years, but maybe that will be sufficed by meeting some young, legal guys.

I don't know how to get something like that going, but I will offer myself up as a candidate. I'm 19, very legal, and I want to help my community and keep these teachers out of the news.

And this goes for all of the cougars on this thread as well. I have ya(hoo) mail with this same account name, in case anyone's interested.

Just trying to help, doing my part.

Heck...hitting it with an older woman is great, best sex teachers....maybe 40 is a bit "older" but I'm pretty sure the 17 y/o wasn't complaining. And if they didn't get caught, he would still be doing it.
Daddy should've confronted the kid and woman and told them to stop...now he's ruined his families life and the womans life.
Before anyone jumps on me....no, I'm not saying it was right....just that with the kid being 17, I would've handled it different.

Religion has nothing to do with it. There's tons of religion in a cathedral, but that doesn't stop certain people from doing certain things.

At 17 you are old enough to have sex with a person up to 24 years old according to Florida law. What in the world is the difference if your 24 or 34. What a joke this law is and it needs to be changed. If Lisa Marinelli were not a teacher this would hardly be a story. In my opinion she should not even be charged with a crime. Who cares if she had sex with a 17 year old young man. Free Lisa Marinelli.

Well, I go to this school, and I've had this teacher as a substitute before. A long time ago.

I actually thought she was nice, and didnt suspect anything of her.
But this was way back in an earlier part of the school year.

Though I dont really pay close attention to who my substitute teachers are, I know this name sounds really familiar.

So I looked her up, found this picture and was dazed. Good luck on the case. D: Wtf are teachers up to these days?

As someone who attends the school and has had her as a substitute several times...I can honestly say that I'm not surprised. But treating the student like a victim here seem ridiculous, since all he's done is brag about it.

Let me share some knowledge from my past.

Briefly dated a girl in high school that was too attractive for her own good. She one day passed along a very provocative letter that she had written. When I asked her about it, she said that she had written it for a teacher that she was hot for.

It didn't sit well with me and soon after that, I broke up with her. I didn't ask if anything happened between them, nor did I want to know. She did tell me where he lived, because she was over there before. As a kid at the time, I thought that was wrong of her, not the teacher.

After doing some research this morning, I've learned that she is a teacher locally herself.

I wonder when her name will drop.....

For the sake of Irony, The Police won a Grammy in 1982 for "Don't Stand So Close To Me" for best rock performance.

Look up the lyrics... I guess you could call it a remix since female teachers are now in the spotlight.

Now DCF has to step in. This woman is now claiming she was trying to "set Up" the boy with her daughter.

The daughter is walking around school claiming it was she who sent the text messages to the boy, not her mother.

As if what she did was not disgraceful enough to make every student at Mitchell embarassed to be going there, now she is using her daughter to give her an alibi.

This child needs dcf and law enforcement to step in now. Her clothing may be clean, she may have food in the fridge but her parents obviously have no concern for the position they are putting her in.

Dear ABBY_914,

They can say the texting was for the daughter but it's been reported BY THE STUDENT that he was with the girl's mother. The boy's Dad witnessed him getting out of the Mom's car fixing his pants. The phone belongs to the Mom. I think it's too little too late here. If I were she, I'd be in a panic right now too. Hopefully, she will just accept her consequences without making things worse for her daughter and the rest of her family.

BTW, for those of you who think this kid is a victim, he is openly bragging to friends and giving details of his encounters with Mrs. Marinelli. I feel so badly for her husband and children. They did not ask for all this.

These three women are symptomatic of a society wide problem: quite a few women love one kind of MAN (e.g., providing financial and emotional support) but want to sleep with another kind of MAN. According Susan Shapiro Barash, author of "Little White Lies, Deep Dark Secrets: The Truth About Why Women Lie," published by St. Martin's Press this week, as many as 60% of women will cheat on their partners. Why? Because half of all wives have such a low opinion of their husbands that they think their husbands will keep them even if they are caught. Result? In cases where paternity is in question between unmarried partners, women lie 30% of the time about paternity. Among married partners, over 10% of all women commit paternity fraud. Mandatory paternity tests would reveal the full extent of said epidemic, e.g., NOW is currently fighting the Tennessee State legislature’s efforts to enact mandatory paternity test for all children born in Tennessee. Apparently a woman committing the most despicable form of domestic abuse is a “private matter” between the two partners.

These women are sex offenders and should be treated accordingly. Unfortunately, modern society has a pathological aversion towards holding women accountable for their actions.

Maybe if we paid more than $25K a year we could recruit some real educators at real schools and programs instead of welfare lines.

Then again what if she is innocent. I mean he is 17 right?

What are these people thinking!

Pay teachers more, and you will attract competitors for the job, at which point you can weed out the scum. Keep offering crappy salaries to teachers, and you will attract crappy candidates for the job. Welcome to Florida, where the phrase "on the cheap" was invented!

I wish people could step back sometimes and consider all of the damage they do with their selfish actions; maybe get some help, rather than just give in to the demons and temptations out there. Her daughter; her students; her parents, husband and friends will all be forever damaged, and all the regret in the world won't change that.

These female teachers are as bad as males when it comes to controlling their urges.

I agree. Age based laws are arbitrary.
They assume everyone below or above a particular date (age) are the same. Which we all know is not true.

But just because the laws are wrong, doesn't make it right to violate them.
