Troopers ID Pregnant Woman, Son Killed In Manatee Crash

MANATEE COUNTY — A two-vehicle accident on State Road 64 in Manatee County this morning has left a pregnant woman and her child dead, highway patrol officials say.

The accident happened about 7:50 a.m. when a westbound SUV carrying the pregnant woman, another woman and seven children was cut off by an eastbound car making a left turn on S.R. 64 at 48th Street Court East, Florida Highway Patrol officials said.

The SUV overturned, ejecting several of the children, who FHP says did not appear to be wearing seat belts. One child was pinned beneath the SUV and killed, FHP says. The other children were transported to an area hospital; their conditions were not immediately available.

The victims are Christi Charles, 33, of the 300 block of Beacon Harbour Loop, in the Heritage Harbour subdivision of Bradenton, and her son, Christopher Charles, who is about 10. His exact age was not available.

One other adult in the SUV, Michelle Glass, 28, of Bradenton, was injured in the wreck and was at Manatee Memorial Hospital this afternoon.

The driver of the other car involved in the wreck is Christine Crews, 43, of Palmetto; she was cited with violation of right of way in the accident, an FHP trooper said. Crews was not seriously injured, the trooper said.

The accident tied up morning commuter traffic in both directions on S.R. 64. The westbound lanes of 64 were shut down at Morgan Johnson Road as of 8:30 a.m., and eastbound traffic was said to be very slow.

S.R. 64, a four-lane road that becomes Manatee Avenue in Bradenton, is a key east-west link between Bradenton and the beaches on the west, to the large subdivisions to the east of I-75.

The area near the wreck is home to the Braden River Lakes subdivision and numerous shopping plazas, including a Publix plaza.
