TAMPA - Fourteen apartments near Carrollwood were evacuated this morning because of a fire, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue officials said.
Firefighters were called to a two-alarm blaze at Marbrisa apartments, 4949 Marbrisa Drive, off Gunn Highway, about 1:10 a.m., said fire rescue spokesman Bruce Delk.
Fourteen of the 16 apartments were occupied, and they were evacuated. Four apartments were destroyed.
One resident heard popping noises coming from her balcony. She woke her husband and they both exited and called 911 from her cell phone. Investigators think the fire started in her apartment.
A smoke detector woke a neighbor across the hall who started knocking on doors to wake other residents, Delk said.
One firefighter was transported by ambulance for a non-life threatening injury.
The Hillsborough County Fire Marshal's office is investigating.
No further information was immediately available.
