PLANT CITY - Telephone service at city hall remained crippled today, the second day of an outage halting calls to and from the downtown building.
The city hall switchboard and individual offices on all three floors of the building at 302 W. Reynolds St. have been affected.
Calls to the main city hall telephone number -- (813) 659-4200 -- and the many extensions produced only a rapid busy signal.
Municipal workers were forced to rely on cellular telephones, internal electronic mail or old-fashioned face-to-face conversation. Incoming and outgoing e-mail beyond city hall also was down.
"Verizon is working to restore service, City Manager David Sollenberger said.
"I don't think we're going to have a phone system or e-mail until Monday,"
he said, noting that this is a first for the building.
"It's a limitation. We're kind of incommunicado."
The outage did not affect calls to Plant City police and other agencies outside city hall.
