Tampa Shuts Down 2 Unlicensed Boarding Houses

Published: May 2, 2008

About 17 people will be relocated from two unlicensed boarding houses in North Tampa after the fire marshal's office deemed the houses unsafe, Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade said.

The buildings have fire and safety violations that need to be corrected before they can be used as boarding houses, he said. The three major concerns are that the buildings don't have fire alarms, fire sprinkler systems or proper fire exits.

The owners of the houses were told a few days ago that residents living in the homes would have to move until the proper permits were acquired and the work was finished, Wade said.

At noon, representatives from the Tampa Fire Marshal's Office and the city's Housing and Community Development Office will be at the Ninth Street location to help with the relocations. Assistance will also be provided to residents at the Myrtle Street address as needed, Wade said.
