SEFFNER - Seffner Christian coach Jim Self has seen a few innings this season like the fifth inning he witnessed Friday in the Crusaders' Class 1A-Region 3 semifinal against Cambridge Christian. And when Self has seen those innings, a loss usually follows.
That pattern held true Friday as the visiting Lancers, the state's No. 2-ranked team in Class 1A, broke open a close game with five runs in an error-filled fifth and cruised to a 10-0 victory.
Cambridge Christian (23-2) will host a best-of-three region final series against Bradenton Christian beginning Friday. The winner advances to the state tournament in Sarasota.
Seffner Christian (17-8) trailed 3-0 entering the fifth when things came apart behind starter Derek Self. Three errors on routine plays led to five Cambridge Christian runs, turning a close game into a blowout.
"You could see that inning suck the life out of them," Lancers coach Rick Shears said. "We just kept capitalizing on their mistakes."
Andrew Widell paced the Lancers' offensive attack by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Trent Tagliarini and Will Bakos added RBI doubles.
Senior right-hander Michael Miller went the distance for the Lancers, allowing three hits - all singles - while striking out six to improve to 9-1. Miller also had a good day at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI.
