BOCA RATON - Plant City quarterback Techonqueyha Shaw had a self-imposed debt to her teammates for getting into a car accident a year ago that sidelined her for the playoffs.
Certainly they can all call it even after Shaw had two touchdown passes, one rushing touchdown and two interceptions as the Raiders beat Dunedin 24-19 in the flag football state quarterfinals at West Boca Raton High Friday night. Plant City will face Jupiter at 3:30 p.m. in this afternoon's state semifinals, with the winner playing either Parkland Douglas or Tallahassee Leon in tonight's final at 7.
"When I owe someone, I don't like to owe them, I like to pay them back and I owed my team," Shaw said. "I tried my hardest to do that. It wasn't 'I'm going to try', it was 'I'm gonna do it.'"
Shaw completed a 7-yard pass to Jessica Bullard with 6:45 remaining in the first quarter to give Plant City the 6-0 lead after the point-after attempt failed.
Dunedin answered with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Auna Gould to Vladana Petricevic five minutes later and made the extra point to take the 7-6 lead.
Dunedin then got the ball after a defensive hold at the Plant City 34 with 51 seconds left in the first half. The Gould-Petricevic duo hooked up again for a 34-yard touchdown pass and extended the lead to 13-6.
With 19 seconds left in the half, Shaw ripped a 41-yard run to get Plant City within one.
Shaw's first pick was with six minutes left in the third quarter and she turned that into a touchdown pass to Tekeyah Clark to give Plant City the 18-13 lead.
Her second pick led to a 2-yard touchdown pass again to Clark to put the Raiders up 24-13.
"At this stage of the tournament, everyone is pretty much equal," Plant City coach Randy Harris said. "Athletes are athletes and it's player for player at this time. Everybody's equal."
