TAMPA - A couple escaped a fire that gutted their house this morning, though one was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
The fire started when the man dropped a pipe lighter and flames quickly spread through the house at 7014 W. Pocahontas, Ave., Ernie Wargo with the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said.
The lighter is a type that remains lit unless closed, Wargo said.
The fire started in the front living room. Though firefighters had the blaze under control 10 minutes after arriving at about 8:47 a.m., the house was gutted, Wargo said.
Neighbors helped the couple from the house and they were outside when firefighters arrived. The man was conscious and alert when taken to a hospital for possible smoke inhalation.
Six units with 15 firefighters were called to the scene.
