TAMPA - A man riding a bicycle on the shoulder of southbound U.S. 41 in Palmetto on Sunday night was hospitalized in critical condition after he tried to cross the highway and was hit by a car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The bicyclist, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center, Trooper Todd Bergman said.
He had serious injuries to his head, chest and one arm, Bergman said.
According to the highway patrol, this is what happened about 6:15 p.m.:
The bicyclist was riding in the same direction as southbound traffic when he tried to cross to the west side of the road. A compact Nissan hit the bicycle almost immediately.
"He didn't even see the car," Bergman said.
The car struck the left side of the bicycle, and the rider hit the windshield, rolled onto the roof and fell on the road behind the vehicle.
The driver of the Nissan, whose name was not immediately available, had the right of way and was not at fault, the highway patrol said.
