LAND O' LAKES - County officials have approved preliminary plans for a Lowe's home improvement store near the intersection of State Road 54 and U.S. 41.
The county's Development Review Committee recently signed off on the project planned for 42 acres adjacent to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office substation. The 170,000-square-foot store would be built on the northern half of the wetlands-laden property.
As part of the construction, DRC officials approved an exemption that will let the developers install a traffic signal at the eastern corner of their site. The new signal would be about 1,000 feet closer than normally allowed to the existing signal at S.R. 54 and U.S. 41.
The exception won approval because it will give deputies and Pasco County Fire Rescue crews safe access to their facilities next door.
Currently, emergency vehicles must make a U-turn at the nearby intersection when they are returning to their home base from the east. The new signal would eliminate that maneuver.
