TALLAHASSEE – Florida State left tackle Daron Rose, a Jefferson High product who started 11 games as a sophomore last season, has been ruled academically ineligible to play next season.
According to Rose's mother, Ann Miller, the 6-foot-5, 285-pound offensive lineman will transfer to a junior college and then rejoin the Seminoles when he regains his eligibility.
"He will just have to dig down and get refocused on his grades,'' Miller said. "He'll be back at Florida State.''
Miller said Rose hasn't decided where he will transfer to improve his grades, but that FSU's coaching staff is helping with the transition period.
Coming out of Jefferson in 2006, Rose was rated the No. 2 offensive tackle in the nation by Rivals.com. He chose FSU over Florida, Michigan, South Carolina and USF.
When offensive line coach Rick Trickett arrived from West Virginia prior to last season, he said Rose was the most physically talented of FSU's offensive lineman. Rose was linked to the academic cheating scandal that forced more than 20 players to miss the Music City Bowl and was scheduled to miss the first three games next season if he was eligible. With Rose unavailable, redshirt freshman Antwane Greenlee is listed as the starting left tackle on the depth chart.
Rose, who is still recovering from a neck injury that forced him to miss most of spring practice, is expected to resume weight training soon.
"It's healing,'' Miller said. "He doesn't have to wear the brace anymore. I think in about eight weeks, he can start getting into the lifting again.''
