Class 2A: Wewahitchka 1, Glades Day 0

PLANT CITY – Wewahitchka took another step closer to defending its Class 2A state title when it defeated Belle Glade Glades Day 1-0 in a state semifinal Wednesday at Plant City Stadium.

The victory extended the Gators' win streak to 14 games.

Wewahitchka (26-2), which stranded runners in scoring position in the first three innings, finally broke through with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

After leading off with a single and stealing second base, Rebecca Barnes (2-for-2) stole third and scored after the throw from the catcher was mishandled.

The one run was all the support Gators pitcher Samantha Rich (21-2) needed, as she gave up two hits and three walks. She struck out 11 of the first 13 hitters she faced and finished with 18 for the game.

"It was a typical Samantha Rich dominant performance," Gators coach Coy Adkins said. "I thought she put the team on her shoulders and carried us."

Rich struck out the side in the first, second, third and sixth innings.

Glades Day's Kailey Boss (8-5) had an impressive outing despite the loss. She gave up five hits and three walks while striking out seven.

Glades Day (21-8) had a prime opportunity to score in the top of the fifth when it had runners on second and third with one out. Rich ended the threat, however, by striking out the next two batters.

Glades Day had one last chance to tie it. But with a runner on second and one out in the seventh, Rich struck out the final two batters to end the game.

"I knew we were facing a very good pitcher," Glades Day coach Sherri Paez said, "but at the same time, I don't think we were very disciplined at the plate. We were swinging at a lot of balls out there."
