ORLANDO - About 1,000 young people turned out today at Disney's Wide World of Sport's Champion Stadium to audition for an ABC reality show based on "High School Musical."
They came from all over the East Coast for a series of auditions that will whittle the group to 10 semifinalists who will compete for a chance to be on "High School Musical: Get In the Picture," which will debut on ABC in July.
The group from Orlando will vie with a similar group from auditions on the West Coast for coveted spots in the reality show's "summer camp," designed to hone singing and dancing skills.
The winner of the reality show will appear in a music video that will run during the closing credits of "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," that is being filmed in Utah. The big-screen version of the popular Disney movie is scheduled to hit theaters in October.
People started lining up at 5:15 a.m. at Champion Stadium. Among the hopefuls was Anna Harrington, a 19-year-old singer from South Tampa who now lives in Kissimmee.
The Blake High School graduate said she saw "High School Musical" in 2006 and was inspired to pursue a career in performing. She is working at the "Blues Brothers Revue" at Universal Studios.
The reality show will be hosted by singer Nick Lachey, who filmed numerous scenes with people who were in line for today's auditions.
