Polk County detectives are hoping the release of video surveillance images will help them identify a couple of suspected copper wire thieves.
Surveillance cameras recorded two men tampering with Tampa Electric wires on May 1.
Around 1:30 p.m. that afternoon, deputies said, two white males removed ground wires that contain copper from the TECO substation located at CR 640 and Pebbledale Road south of Mulberry.
The suspects could have caused a significant amount of damage to the transformer and caused a power outage across Polk County.
Detectives think the pair stole the copper wire in order to sell it.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Polk County Sheriff's Office Det. Ian Rylott at (800) 226-0344 or (863) 499-2400.
