Florida started its annual rollout of public school test scores and school grades today by releasing the writing scores on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. The test is taken in grades four, eight and 10.
Results released today on the FCAT writing portion show that statewide, average writing scores on the essay portion of the test changed little from last year, dipping slightly in grade four and up slightly in grade eight.
Hillsborough County students hit the state average on the essay in grade four, and exceeded state average scores in grade eight by four points. The district determined that its eighth-graders had the highest average score in the state. Its 10th-graders were slightly above the state average.
The test has included an essay portion and multiple-choice portion for three years, but only the essay portion results are used to calculate schools' grades.
The state reports test results a number of ways, including percentages of students at or above grade level on both portions on the test. Hillsborough's percentage of students considered proficient by the state exceeded the state average in both eighth and 10th grade but fell below the state average in fourth grade.
