LAKELAND A 16-year-old Kathleen High School student was accused by deputies today of cutting another student in the neck with a box cutter razor, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
Jenny Cayo, of 7743 Canterbury Circle, was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and aggravated battery.
According to deputies, the 17-year-old female victim was cut at 6:45 a.m. in the school's cafeteria. Cayo ran into another building and the victim, whose name was not released by the sheriff's office, followed.
As she ran, Cayo threw the box cutter on the ground, deputies said. When the school's resource deputy arrested her, a razorblade that is used in box cutters was found in her back pocket. The box cutter Cayo said she tossed has not been found, the sheriff's office said.
The victim suffered a superficial 4-inch cut on the side of her neck and was treated by a school nurse.
Cayo and the victim had an ongoing verbal dispute that turned physical today, sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said. Other students may be involved in the dispute and the investigation is ongoing, Rodgers said.
The Polk County School Board has expelled Cayo.
