A quick look at some of the previous incarnations of the popular "Grand Theft Auto" series shows how the video game series has changed in the past 10 years.
"Grand Theft Auto" (1998)
The original game featured a top-down view of its primitive 2-D graphics. But it also introduced many elements still used in the series, such as the different radio stations that play while driving and the spray paint shops where you can change the color of your car to fool the police. It also included all three locations - Liberty City, Vice City and San Andreas - that the series would later explore in greater detail.
"Grand Theft Auto III" (2001)
A giant technological leap for not only for the "GTA" series, but also for video games in general, the third installment brought the series into a 3-D world and expanded on the idea of open-ended, free-roaming gameplay. It was also the first "GTA" with a story line, strongly reminiscent of gangster movies such as "The Godfather" or "Goodfellas." Licensed music and big-name voice talent upped the ante.
