PLANT CITY – Pembroke Pines Charter, ranked No. 1 in the USA Today national poll, is one win away from a perfect season after the Jaguars beat Glen St. Mary Baker County 12-1 in five innings in a Class 4A state semifinal Friday at Plant City Stadium.
PPC junior Lauren Sewell (15-0) was in command from the outset, striking out Baker County's first three batters on nine pitches. She limited the Wildcats (22-4) to three hits while striking out 13 and walking two.
"I was keeping them off balance," Sewell said. "I was going in and out on them and was able to throw a lot of my pitches for strikes."
Sewell, who struck out the side in the first, second and fourth innings, struck out 11 of the first 13 hitters she faced.
"This being our first time [at the state tournament], it was a little intimidating; especially against the No. 1 team in the country," Baker County coach Cheryl Nunn said. "That was definitely the best team and pitcher we've seen this year."
The Jaguars (30-0), who are trying for their first state title, jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Kandyce Redondo's RBI double and Audrey Broyles' RBI single.
After getting six runs in the first three innings off Baker County starter Tiffany Smith (10-2), PPC continued the onslaught with six runs off reliever Cami Craig.
Alicia Sisco went 2-for-2 with two walks, three stolen bases and three runs scored. Broyles was 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and a two runs scored.
