Plant's Givens Invited To Baseball Classic
Plant junior shortstop/pitcher Mychal Givens has received an invitation to the Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic, Panthers coach Dennis Braun said Thursday.
The game, which will be played this summer, features the nation's top rising senior baseball players. Givens, who went 8-1 with a 1.79 ERA and hit .421 with 34 runs scored and 17 RBIs this season, is regarded as one of the nation's top prospects for the 2009 MLB draft.
This is the third consecutive year a Hillsborough County baseball player has been selected for the game. Former Hillsborough star Michael Burgess was selected for the 2006 game, and Riverview senior Anthony Ferrara was selected for last year's game.
FOOTBALL: Wharton junior quarterback Andrew Clifford took home the golden jersey after winning the Golden Gun Accuracy Challenge at the 2008 EA SPORTS Elite 11 regional quarterback camp at the University of Alabama on Saturday.
Clifford scored 15 points in the preliminary round, and then won the finals with six points. The camp also included Georgia commitment Zach Mettenberger.
"When I went up there, I didn't expect to do good," Clifford said. "It definitely helped my confidence."
The rising senior, who threw for 1,471 yards with 10 touchdowns last season, has interest from USF, UCF, Louisville, Clemson, Auburn and Illinois.
RECRUITING: Berkeley Prep senior guard Zak Kazanski has decided to play basketball for Division III Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate New York; Jesuit senior lineman Andy Ratchford, a 6-foot-1, 280 pound center, has decided to play football for John Carroll University, a Division III program in Cleveland.
