LAND O' LAKES -- A group of children headed to school from the Chelsea Woods Apartments shared their bus shelter with a dead man this morning.
Deputies responding to an 8:27 a.m. call from a distressed mother found a 19-year-old white male sitting on a bench in a bus shelter at 4453 Alpine Road.
Investigators believe he died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head; a neighbor reported hearing a gunshot at about 3:50 a.m. today, Pasco County Sheriff's Office spokesman Doug Tobin said.
Pine View Elementary and Middle schools were placed in lockdown mode for less than an hour until it was determined that the man died by suicide, Tobin stated.
According to an incident report, one of several children waiting for their school bus called their mother to tell her there was a "dead person at their bus stop."
When the mother arrived, "she found the children had boarded their bus, went to school, and that there was indeed a body sitting on the bench," the report states.
