Published: May 9, 2008

TAMPA - The grocery chain Sweetbay is hoping customers bring in their federal economic stimulus checks – and is offering some perks to customers who do.

Starting today, Sweetbay is offering a 10-percent bonus gift card when customers convert their checks into Sweetbay gift cards. For example, people who bring in a $600 government check will receive a $660 Sweetbay card. Families who bring in an $1,800 check receive a $1,980 card.

Hey, Sweetbay, where's the 10% bonus for those who make too much to get a stimulus check?

(at Publix, I guess)

I bet this is supposed to make up for the massive customer debit card information exposure.

I don't think I want to spend any of my money there. The last itme I did I had to get all of my debit/credit cards changed. Thanks for nothing, Sweetbay!

Sweetbay is SO expensive. You'd be well served spending and SAVING the ten percent somewhere else. Like, Wal-Mart, for snacks, frozen food, coffee, paper products, etc.

Wow, we haven't even got it yet and everyone else is already trying to get their hands on it. Fact is Sweet Bay will still be making a nice profit. Wouldn't it be great if they just lowered all their prices by 10% and gave us all a break? Personally, I'd like my check to at least see the inside of a bank for a little while before its gone.

Sorry, but my Chinese Loan is not going for food. I've already budgeted for that. I need a new camera so I can take even cheesier pictures.

SweetBay (the new name) has always been too expensive. I'm not getting a stimulus check as I lived in another household until just before Christmas, so they get to claim me. I went grocery shopping the other night and there were people everywhere stocking shelves and I could not help but wonder if the prices had been raised. I spent over 150.00 and did not buy one piece of meat. Things are just outrageous. I do not know what people are going to do. People like me that only have their social security and do not want to go on welfare are just going to have to learn to do without.

I haven't set foot in ScamBay since my credit card was hacked by a thief due to their stupidity. I hope they go bankrupt.

I remember reading just a while back that a little over 80% of gift cards are never cashed in. This sounds a lot like a great money maker.

Goodtimejim, I think people would DEFINITELY use THIS gift card. Everyone has to eat and restock their homes with other non-food items like bathroom tissue, toothpaste and soap.

BrassBowl, I think your term, China Loan, more accurately describes the tax stimulus check. I will desperately try not to spend mine on anything from China, which means I will probably pay down some credit card debt. That is, unless my CREDITORS use it to pay back China. Hmmm.
