LAND O' LAKES - A group of children headed to school from the Chelsea Woods Apartments shared their bus shelter with a dead man Friday morning.
Deputies responding to an 8:27 a.m. call from a distressed mother found a 19-year-old white man sitting on a bench in a bus shelter at 4453 Alpine Road.
Investigators think he died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head; a neighbor reported hearing a gunshot about 3:50 a.m. Friday, Pasco County Sheriff's Office spokesman Doug Tobin said.
Pine View Elementary and Middle schools were placed in lockdown mode for less than an hour, until it was determined there was no threat, Tobin said.
According to an incident report, one of several children waiting for their school bus called his or her mother to tell her there was a "dead person at their bus stop."
When the mother arrived, "she found the children had boarded their bus, went to school, and that there was indeed a body sitting on the bench," the report states.
