PONTE VEDRA BEACH - Boo Weekley tells everybody that he does not know a thing about golf history. He just happened to start playing as a kid.
A week ago, however, Weekley's father, Tom, was quoted in a national magazine story suggesting his boy paid a lot more attention to golf as a kid that he now lets on.
What about it, Boo?
"Daddy's full of it," he said. "Like he said I read a bunch of Hogan books; I read two Hogan books, and they were my neighbor's. He said I probably read every Hogan book there was. I think somebody quoted him wrong.
"Now I do watch a little more golf now. If I'm laying around the house at night getting ready to fall asleep, I'll flip over and see what's going on in golf. But I ain't going to sit there and just watch it."
Thanks For Playing
Robert Garrigus shot 76 Friday to miss the cut at 11 over. He did not, however, leave empty handed.
Garrigus' handsome consolation prize was a hole-in-one at the 164-yard, par-3 13th.
He holed an 8-iron.
"Yeah, that was one of the only highlights of the week for me," he said. "We're standing on the tee box waiting for the group in front of us. I was joking around trying to chuck stuff in the garbage and not really paying attention. Get up, slapped an 8-iron right at it and ended up going in. It was kind of a shock."
Just Ask
Both the Players Championship and the TPC Sawgrass course belong to the PGA Tour so it can do anything it wants this week.
That meant the course was set up hard and fast this week, and then strong winds pushed the envelope in regard to the level of difficulty.
Ernie Els wishes players had asked for input.
"Especially the way the wind is blowing now," he said. "There are a couple of flags out there, if it gets more windy, I think play could be stopped. The ball is running off some of these greens. They could maybe ask guys a couple of questions, how to set the course up."
And You Thought 17 Was Tough
The ball-eating 17th hole took 18 victims on Friday, but was upstaged by the par-3 13th.
The 181-yard No. 13 hole got a putter.
It belonged (once) to Charley Huffman, who sent it helicoptering into the dark water on the way to three-putting for a double bogey. He used a sand wedge to putt the rest of the day, finishing with an 83 to miss the cut.
Maggert Tragedy
Jeff Maggert withdrew before Friday's second round, telling tournament officials that his brother died in a small plane crash in Colorado en route to his son's college graduation.
According to reports, a Cessna co-owned by Barry Maggert went down about 40 miles west of Denver.
Jeff Maggert played Thursday afternoon and opened with an even-par 72. He learned of the plane crash when he finished his round and quickly left.
Maggert is a three-time winner on the PGA Tour who has played on three Ryder Cup teams. He lives in Houston and has five children, including 3-year-old twin girls.
