PLANT CITY - A 36-year-old motorcyclist was struck and killed in a fiery crash that shut down part of the westbound lanes of Interstate 4 early today.
Gilberto Acevedo, of Tampa, was ejected from his 2005 Suzuki after being hit by a 2002 Chevy pick-up truck about 2:25 a.m., according to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol.
Acevedo was traveling west on I-4 in the center lane, a mile east of Park Road, when he was struck by the westbound truck as it was changing lanes, the release said.
Acevedo, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on the inside lane of I-4. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Plant City Fire Rescue. The truck dragged the motorcycle down the roadway, and both vehicles caught fire.
The truck driver, Luis Gonzalez-Ines of Lakeland, fled the scene on foot and was captured a short time later in woods along I-4 with help from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit.
Gonzalez-Ines is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with death and driving while his license was suspended causing death, the release said. He was being held at the Orient Road Jail on $17,000 bond, records showed.
The closed portion of I-4 was reopened shortly after 8 a.m.
