Public Safety Personnel Honored As Heroes

Hillsborough County's law enforcement, fire and rescue, and other public safety officers were honored May 1 at the 14th annual Our Heroes Luncheon, sponsored by Sykes Enterprises. More than 2,000 guests at the Tampa Convention Center watched as representatives from six law enforcement agencies and four fire departments were honored at the Heroes Table. Special recognition was given to Sgt. Ron Harrison, the deputy killed in the line of duty in August 2007. His daughter Ronnee Harrison represented him. Proceeds from the event benefit the Coy L. Sykes Memorial Scholarships, awarded to children of law enforcement personnel. The 2008 scholarship recipients were also recognized. They are Amanda Gilbertsen, James Wolff, Alyssa Martinez, Kaleigh Hill, Daniel Kiefer, Michelle Cimo, Stephen Frey and Tyler Metcalf.

A Tropical Affair At Cruise Terminal
The Mayor's Beautification Program hosted its 15th annual Silverspoons & Sandcastles gala May 2 at the Tampa Port Authority Cruise Terminal No. 3. About 700 guests attended. De Lei'ed Parrots provided live music. Bidding was continuous during a silent auction of more than 100 items, including water buckets and rain barrels hand-painted by local artists and celebrities. The benefit raised about $150,000 for beautification, the Success Through Environmental Partnerships and Service (STEPS) youth program, and Learning to Grow, Growing to Learn minigrants. The event was chaired by Shannon Edge, Karen Palus and Ron Pierce.

SeaGrapes Serves Up Fine Wines And Food

More than 100 fine wines and food from 23 restaurants and stores was served May 3 during the Sea Grapes Fine Wine & Food Festival at The Florida Aquarium. Jazz played throughout the aquarium as 550 guests bid on auction items. Steve and Teresa Oscher were event chairmen. Proceeds benefit the aquarium's education, restoration and rehabilitation programs.

Latinos United At Luncheon

The Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Council hosted the 11th annual Latinos Unidos Luncheon on April 30 at the Tampa Convention Center. The event, for about 400 guests, was part of a conference aimed at developing new Hispanic leaders. Antonia Coello Novello, the first female and Hispanic surgeon general of the United States, gave the keynote address. Chaired by Maria Elena Elizalde, the luncheon raised $15,000 for Hispanic student scholarships.
