Obama plans to begin a three-day tour of Florida by visiting Tampa on May 21.

Published: May 12, 2008
TAMPA - Moving into his new role as the likely Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama will seek to mend fences with his first visit in months to Florida, including a Tampa campaign event, next week.
Obama plans to begin a three-day tour of Florida by visiting Tampa on May 21 – the first campaign day after the Kentucky and Oregon primaries, which his campaign believes will, in effect, seal the nomination.
It's significant that he plans to spend that day in Florida, particularly in the Tampa Bay area, Florida's biggest media market.
"It's consistent with what he's been doing the last couple of days, which is pivoting to the general election," said veteran Democratic political consultant Derek Newton of Miami, who has been neutral in the race between Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Newton and others said it indicates Obama wants to soothe resentment by Florida voters over their primary disenfranchisement, and to vigorously contest the race for Florida against John McCain.
This week, Obama will visit Michigan, the other state boycotted by the Democratic contenders and penalized by the national party over a too-early primary.
Obama's Florida trip will be his first since November, and his first stop in Tampa since September.
Those visits were for fundraising only, in keeping with the pledge Obama and the candidates took to avoid campaigning publicly in the Florida primary.
Next week's tour will include fundraising, but will concentrate on events with public exposure, said Obama's Florida finance chairman, Kirk Wagar.
Obama's previous public campaign event in Tampa was a rally in Ybor City in April 2007, thronged by some 2,000 attendees.
The Democratic contenders boycotted Florida until the Jan. 29 primary because the date broke the party schedule. The four states that had party approval to hold early primaries demanded the pledge, which allowed only fundraising, not campaigning, in Florida and Michigan. Since then, the candidates have been preoccupied with primaries in other states.
Campaign spokesman Josh Earnest said plans for the Tampa stop aren't set yet, but could include a rally or a town-hall style gathering.
Obama needs to re-establish relations with Florida voters, after the boycott and his previous insistence that the Florida primary results shouldn't count, said Jim Kitchens, an Orlando-based Democratic political pollster.
Obama has recently offered to negotiate a compromise over seating the Florida and Michigan delegates, but Clinton has continued to insist the primaries count in full.
"The whole Democratic Party has fences to mend down here," Kitchens said. "Obama didn't break the fences, but since he's the nominee, he's got to mend them."
Polls, he said, have shown that up to a quarter of the Florida Democrats who voted Jan. 29 indicated the boycott and controversy over the delegates could affect whether they vote for the Democratic nominee.
"When it's down to either Obama or John McCain, those Democrats may come home, but some may not," he said.
Obama's estrangement from Florida has led to speculation that he might not compete to win the state, instead seeking an Electoral College majority elsewhere. Obama denies that, and Earnest said he doesn't believe the party sanctions and boycott are a significant issue for voters.
"Florida voters want to hear about universal health care coverage, how we're going to get our troops out of Iraq, how to deal with the weakening economy," he said. "The other things will get brushed aside when we talk about [those] issues."
Asked whether Obama will seek to explain or justify the boycott to Floridians, Earnest said, "Reporters and others may ask him about it, and he'll certainly answer those questions."
Florida Republicans, however, have taken every opportunity to bash the Democratic Party and its candidates over the boycott, and won't pass up this one, said party spokeswoman Erin VanSickle.
"We're going to do more than just put out a press release," she said, refusing to elaborate.
Responded Earnest: "When you're running on the legacy of George W. Bush, you'd rather talk about almost anything but the issues."
After the May 20 Kentucky and Oregon primaries, Obama won't yet have a majority of all the Democratic convention delegates, but he expects to have a majority of the pledged delegates who are chosen by primaries and caucuses.
That will put the race in the hands of the unpledged superdelegates, who aren't bound by primary results.
"As we've said, we can't imagine the superdelegates overturning the decision" of the primary and caucus results, said Earnest. "We consider that a significant day in the contest."

What a hypocrite! Obama actively fought to keep our vote from counting in the primary and now he plans to ask for our vote in the general election?
No way! McCain 08 Hillary 2012. This jerk chose to run with only 143 days of experience; now he can pay for his impatience by watching the democratic party vote for McCain or sit on their hands.

This presidential race is not over yet. I cannot believe the arrogance of this man and this article stating that he is the nominee. That hasn't been decided yet. I still believe that Hillary will be the nominee. She won Florida fair and square.
Sure Florida voters want to hear about the issues but brushing our primary results and disenfranchisement aside is purely ARROGANT. He thinks that this doesn't bother us? I am sure there will be some voters out there who will be "booing" his so-called town meeting or whatever. I think a whole bunch of Hillary supporters should be there with signs reminding him to COUNT OUR VOTES FULLY from the January 29th primary!!!
I for one could care less if he visits Florida to pander for our votes now. He will definitely not get mine. I will write in Hillary Clinton's name on ballot. Never will I vote for McCain. Let's not waste our votes. We don't want another Bush administration. Wake up people!!! How about NOT SHOWING UP for his visit here in Tampa. Lack of crowds will speak volumes!!! But I am sure there will be a few out there who think that Senator Obama is the "second coming". This white grandma will not fall for his empty rhetoric. Please just stay away Senator Obama.

The democratic party has disenfranchised the voters of Florida and now here comes Obama to suck up to all of you. I'm sure he will claim that your votes should count at the convention. I wouldn't trust this guy as far as i could throw him. He's nothing but a socialist, arrogant, condescending elitist. Hey Obama, I'm bitter so i hang onto my religion and guns so why don't you go AWAY and go have a chat with your racist reverend buddy.

The Dem's will try to hang the 'third Bush term' label on McCain but I don't think it will stick. He has always been a maverick, often disagreeing with his party and has a reputation for reaching across the isle. He has been about about 'change' since Obama was in college. That is why many in his own party have a problem with him (myself included). He is not conservative enough, but he sure is better than the alternative.
We simply cannot accept Obama's socialist agenda. BTW, can anybody name just one of Obama's accomplishments? Being charismatic dosen't count.

He's only doing this because he must know they are going to let Florida have a re-vote or something. Otherwise it doesn't make sense. And he'll get all the blacks in a tizzy over him just because he's half-black. No one is paying any attention the RED FLAGS!!!! And there are many. Too bad it's not so easy for Hillary. She actually has to work for her votes and prove herself, which she's done millions of times. What has Obama accomplished? He and his wife are completely anti-American and everyone just turns a blind eye. I won't vote Dem if he becomes the nominee. And he can't win against McCain anyway. So, a vote for Obama is a vote for McCain. That's real smart.

Our voter's rights were ignored by him and he is coming here for the superdelgate votes. As popular as everyone says he is why does he need superdelgate votes and money? He says he was following the RULES. I didn't know in the United States of America that some votes count and other don't because of what party you are in? He use to CARE about VOTERS RIGHTS in CHICAGO. But he didn't care about FLORIDA nad MICHIGAN.

Wow, I'm kind of glad Florida's votes are always screwed up as it's obvious that not too many people here are actually educated voters. It's so sad that people would rather spew hatred and unsubstantiated lies than actually listen and learn the truth about someone. No wonder the kids in this state are ranked 48th in the country regarding their educations. Obama didn't disenfranchise Florida, the DNC and the Republican Congress you people elected did. Why not just admit that Florida is as redneck as many other parts of the south, get your white hoods out and get it over with.

Blah blah HILLARY...Blah blah HILLARY. Hillary is the only one who cared about Florida's votes in the primary? Was this BEFORE or AFTER she realized Obama was going to win? If memory serves me correctly, we did not hear a word from Hillary regarding Florida, until after. We certainly did not hear a word from Hillary when the DNC said, if Florida breaks the rules and moves their primary up, the votes will not count. Where was Hillary then? Hillary was no where to be found (because she did not think there was a formidable opponent out there). I GUARANTEE if the roles were reversed (had Obama been down but had the Florida votes), Hillary would be the LAST person shouting, "Florida's votes should count." Wake up to reality. Just like Hillary, a lot of you McCain supporters continue to underestimate Obama. I suspect you too, will be disappointed come November. The truth is, few, if anyone in either political party thought much about Florida (Hillary, Obama, McCain) until they realized how close the race would be. So don't try to blame one person for a problem someone else created.

He jabbers on about "Change" but NEVER says what that "Change" will be. It is VERY possible "THAT CHANGE" will NOT be good for any of US.

I Have Clean Connections Despite Rezko - LIAR, you are not only connected to Exelon and Rezko, you are also connected to Hillary PAC supporter Mr. Hsu, AND an Iraqi Billionaire of ill repute, Nadhmi Auchi, who ripped off people in the Food For Oil, Iraqi deal. Seems Mr. Auchi may have helped Obama buy his million dollar property long before Obama had millions of dollars. Wonder what favors Mr. Auchi expects, when Obama leaves Iraq free to be taken over by special interests such as him.
58.) I never heard sermons like Rev. Wright's, that have been in videos all day, You Tube - LIAR! 3 days later during your Mea Culpa BS s peech you said "Did I hear controversial statements while I sat in that church? Yes I did."

Obama is going to win, get over it! Hillary would still be behind in delegates even if Florida was counted.

In Larry King's interview with Jon Stewart, Larry brought up the subject of the primaries and asked Jon if America was really ready for a woman or a black president.
Jon looked at him quizzically and said:
"Larry, that is such a non-question. Did anyone ask in 2000 if America was ready for a moron?"

I would love to comment on B. Hussein Obama's legislative record if I could find one. His record is wafer thin, consisting of over one hundred "Present" votes, especially on controversial bills on which he would have to take a position. His U.S. Senate "career" has been singularly undistinguished. His only drawing point is that he makes people, who don't know or don't want to know any better, feel good with empty words. I, for one, will not be fainting at an Obama rally, not that I will ever GO to an Obama rally. Never in our history have we been on the verge of electing someone so unqualified for the highest position in the land, and that scares me.

1 4 Justice: You said it all. Of course, if Obama supporters read all of this, their eyes will probably be glazed over because they won't believe any of it anyway. Unfortunately, it is true but his supporters are so naive and gullible. Not fooling me for one minute. This man is scary and should NOT be our President. Enough said.

True Dolphin68...
It's scary to think that the "Obama Followers" are so naive, even to the point of being brainwashed, that they can't even consider the "truth". Unfortunately, he has the same power of manipulation over people that "Jim Jones", "David Koresh" & even "Adolph Hitler" had on people. Wow, that turned out great huh?
As for "Tiko" (above), I AM from the JFK era. And I find it disgusting that Obama can even use "His" name, or that of Martin Luther King, when referring to himself. And as for Teddy Kennedy backing Obama...that does NOT speak highly of "the Kennedys". You have to wonder how long it took Teddy to climb out of the bottle to even speak. And being a staunch Democrat (that has openly admitted to his absolute dislike of the Clintons), he was left with no other choice than Obama. Do your homework on the life of JFK and open your eyes to the life of Obama...you will find Polar Opposites!

lang0308...you must be very young or naive (or both). Do you honestly blame Hillary for Bills infidelity??? And I bet you believe he's the only "President" that has ever "done the deed in the White House". LOL
Be honest, how may women have the "grit & strength" to withstand all she has, & can still hold her head up & shoulders square?
That "Woman" has bigger *@&*@ than both the men she is running against (combined)!
And your belief that the people voting for her, are the same morons that voted for Bush...NOT!
He's a Republican...She's a Democrat. Follow the news...this is the first time in history that so many people have crossed "Party Lines".

Let me see.......... You've got a junior Senator with little or no foreign relations experience with a dodgy voting record who's only had 1 sponsored bill enacted into law and he's a complete pipe-dreamer about peace in the Middle East and the way the world works. He's stayed away from Florida like we have the Bubonic plague and now that you democrats MIGHT be important, he comes around. Obama's never cared in the least what you democrats here think, but he's been more than happy to take your cash. This is the guy who's done everything short of burning the ballot boxes here in Florida so they won't be counted. Barack Obama has done everything in his power to make sure you voters don't get your votes counted. Quite the fair-weather fan of the Florida Democrat, isn't he? Yeah, he's just what we need....................

Justice----
The only thing we need to know about McLame et.al. is that he wrote a campaign finance reform bill, put his name on it, got it passed into law, and then proceeded to break it by securing loans with matching funds for his campaign. I smell HYPOCRITE! Same old GOP that I have known for years.
As far as Hill, get on the O-train people! What? You can't see past your own genatalia to vote for a guy? C'mon!
BTW, I AM ELITE comparatively since I wasn't educated by the sorry Florida public educational system that has been run by religious Con-tards for decades.

lang 0308, Hillary supporters are NOT morons, nor did we vote for Bush (ever). It seems to me that you are the moron. I am a native from Miami and definitely not racist. I was there during the riots and also when latinos made Hialeah their home. I am a white grandma and love Florida. Justice, you amaze me and are right on with your statements. The only change we need here is for Hillary Clinton to become our next President. I am so happy that she won another primary last night big time. Oh and LiberT, if you think you are too good (or elite) to live here in Florida and be educated here, then maybe you should go somewhere else. I was educated here all my life and am doing pretty well, thank you. I definitely will NOT be getting on any O-train. I think his main engine might be breaking down. Enough said.

LiberT...
When it comes to calling the people educated in Florida "Uneducated"...You actually should look in the mirror. What's wrong? My "Posting of Obamas 58 Lies" too much for you to read, or perhaps understand. We here in FL understand what a "Band Wagoner" is.
So glad you found something to hang your "tarnished star" on.
FYI...I tried to live in TN...unfortunatly for all your relatives, I was TOO SMART & TOO CIVILIZED. I actually prefer to have windows & doors in my home. And I do NOT like to collect cars and/or trash in my yard.
My family tree has plenty of limbs! Perhaps you are in the right place now after all..where we have palm trees to remind you of what your "Family Tree" looks like.
And your remark re: Fried Chicken is somewhat strange...after all, when Moms in TN call their kids for dinner it's usually..."KIDS Y'ALL GIT ON IN DA TRUUUCK"!
Directions to TN...North until you see billboards with pictures only (no writing)...YOU'RE HOME!!
PS: TAKE OBAMA WITH YOU!

The palm trees are quite symbolic of the politicians and the voters of this state that put them there...Sticks in the mud. Insult banjo pickin'? What culture has this state offered up as artistic or culturally significant? It's all imported from somewhere else. And as for "hillbilly"...I'll have you know that I am a HILL-WILLIAM, as I graduated from college, not one of your "religious" institutions that fake an education. If "Civilized" is this, howcome your utopia has to import educated talent whilst you post on the computer with your deft "one-handed" typing ability no doubtedly mastered while surfing "Moral" internet sites!

Would someone at TBO please remove the posting from RevThaddeusPaul above dated 5/12, time 11:56 (exclam, exclam) Have been requesting to no joy.
The song title that blogger made reference to (last line of blg) is not only lewd, it is degrading.
Might be a great C&W song (for a listening audience with a mean average IQ of 87 or thereabouts) but is not appropriate to this discussion thread and is insulting to women and to whomever the "Reverend" (?) made reference.
And thanks for the update on Senator Obama's visit to Tampa. Please keep up updated with respect to time and venue.
Though a staunch Libertarian, would like to hear what the man has to say and consider casting my vote for him come November.

Obama is a true leader: articulate, visionary, brilliant, well-educated, thoughtful. In short, he is everything our current pathetic-excuse-for-a- president is not. Therefore, in our dysfunctional state, which has been firmly in the hands of the Republican Party for well over a decade and is a MESS in so many areas, it makes perfect sense that sooooo many people will not appreciate him. I hope he wins (but I don't have much faith in American democracy any more) without Florida.
And I have lived here 29 years-since 1979!
