TAMPA – Searchers found the wreckage of the Rev. Forrest Pollock's plane and the bodies of the popular pastor of Bell Shoals Baptist Church and his 13-year old son, Preston, about 20 miles southwest of Asheville, N.C.

The plane was in rugged terrain more than two hours on foot from the nearest access point.

The Rev. George Thomasson, associate pastor of Bell Shoals, stood inside the sanctuary where Pollock normally delivered sermons and, fighting tears, told about 100 staff and church members the grim news.

"We have been given the news that the actual plane was identified, and it is the pastor's plane and that Pastor Forrest and his son Preston were found having died," Thomasson said. "All of our hearts are broken."

The crowd, including Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee, a church member, was openly weeping.

Later, Thomasson told reporters that Pollock flew to North Carolina with Preston and 14-year-old daughter Brooke to visit Pollock's mother. On Monday, he and Preston were to fly to Little Rock, Ark., to pick up another passenger for the flight to a Christian networking conference in Texas.

It was the passenger who initiated the search when he said Pollock never arrived.

"We have not lost Forrest Pollock. We know just where he is. One day there will be a reunion time," Thomasson said.

Gee said the airport in Raleigh, N.C., on Monday received intermittent radio signals but had to cancel an air search because of high winds around the mountains. A helicopter from the North Carolina Highway Patrol found the wreckage.

Gee said Pollock was "well respected and well loved."

The Federal Aviation Administration has closed airspace around the crash site and set up a command center, WSPA-TV in Spartanburg, S.C., reported.

Pollock and and his son left the Rutherford County, N.C., airport early Monday morning.

The Rev. Ken Whitten of Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz cried when he learned that the wreckage of his friend's plane had just been found.

"He was a model husband … a motivating pastor," Whitten said through his tears. "He was brilliant."

Pollock was also "a cautious and intelligent pilot," Whitten said.

Pollock has led the large congregation for six years.

The 44-year-old pastor was married with six children.

He was at a wonderful time in his career, friends and colleagues said.

"The church is just booming," said Tom Biles, executive director of Tampa Bay Baptist Association. "They just moved into their new auditorium two weeks ago. ... Both services were jam packed."

Bell Shoals has about 7,500 members, and about 3,000 people attend services each week.

"Bell Shoals has a wonderful fellowship of believers ... outstanding Christian leaders with high integrity," Biles said. "It's been on a growth spurt for several years.

When Pollock got the call to go to Bell Shoals in 2003, he was elated, Whitten said.

"Forrest would tell me, 'I won the lottery!' Not in a material sense, but in a spiritual sense. Congregations know when pastors love them, and Forrest loved his people. And they loved him back.

"Our heart at Idlewild is breaking."

Pollock came to the church with a background in television production.

Pollock became interested in TV production while in high school in Oklahoma, working as a volunteer intern at a TV station. He went on to start his own TV production company and work as a TV reporter and anchor and print reporter "before God called me into ministry," he told The Tampa Tribune in 2007.

After graduating from Southwestern Baptist Seminary in 1994, Pollock served churches in Fort Worth, Texas, for three years and Baton Rouge, La., for five years before joining Bell Shoals.

He has been working toward a master's degree from Harvard University.

Pollock replaced the Rev. Ken Alford as senior pastor. Alford left the position in February 2002 after admitting to an "improper relationship."

Pollock said Bell Shoals never set out to become a "megachurch," but the congregation has grown to that extent.

The church has a satellite facility on East Bay Road, where Pollock's recorded sermons are played on a large screen. Bell Shoals plans to broadcast the sermons by satellite to 10 auxiliary churches.

That's a major jump in the 46 years since 17 men met in a house and talked about their vision for a church. There were 86 charter members when the church was formed in 1961. Members had no hymnals and sat on folding chairs.

The church now has a 39-acre campus and an academy with roughly 650 students from preschool through eighth grade.

The church has not shied away from politics, either.

In 2007, the church hosted a conference that drew national leaders of the religious right to discuss gay rights issues, Islam, abortion and other issues of what they call the "culture wars."

The Family Impact Summit provoked protests from local gay rights groups that included a vigil by protesters on the final day of the event. Equality Florida, which bills itself as a human rights group dedicated to the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, spearheaded the protest.

The summit included speakers familiar to religious and social conservative movement members — Don Wildmon, founder of the American Family Association; Gary Bauer, past president of the Family Research Council; Tony Perkins, FRC's current president; Ken Blackwell, former Ohio secretary of state; and others.

The church provided water and restroom facilities to the protesters, who stood outside for about 90 minutes.

I could list the names of alot of famous people let alone the not so famous people that died from flying their own planes. JFK JR is one of my biggest memories. It is safer to use commercial airlines.
I hope the best for him.

But if there's any way that you would allow him to stay with us an excellent example of a good Christian man, please return him safely. Pastor Pollock and family, you are in my prayers!

This must be a wakeup call to all. Look around you and see all the devastation that is going on. We must stand together as children of Christ and believe that this Pastor and his son will return safe. We cannot allow the devil to take a man of God. Believe, trust, wait upon the Lord. We need to know that the power is not in the hands of the Satan but in the resurrection of the Lord. Stand together and believe that we recieve their safe return. Thanks you Lord for all that you do for us. Thank you for their safe return and we thank you in the name of Your Son Jesus Christ. Amen

I can guarantee that he puts in more than his 10% tithe to the church. If he's got enough to have a plane, why not? He goes to many different church-based conferences around the nation, so flying works out well.

Its so easy for people to judge someone when they don't know them. Jelousy is the root of all evil. Those who know Pastor Pollack and his family love them. He always welcomes everyone, his door is opened to all. He never has a snobbish heir about him and never makes you feel beneath him. He always shows love and compassion toward you and is truely interested in you. He never used his position for great power just great love. He loved his mission and truely loved his family and it always showed in everything that he did. People love him for the man he is not the position he held or what he had monitarily. I pray that all you who judge so harshly will never be in the position that this family is in, but if you are I hope you have all the love and support that we give to this family in their time of need. My prayers are truely with them and I hope for a miracle.

What about helping poor people, or childern. I'm guessing that plane would have bought alot of food, school clothes, dental appt. for people and kids right in this area. It is truly a shame that in a time of potential tragedy there are always small-minded, jealous people who cannot look past their own bigotry and prejudice. Pastor Forrest did not "start a mega-church," he made a fortune in business before God called him into ministry. I have personally benefitted tremendously not only from his preaching but from his friendship. This is a difficult time for our church and his family, and I respectfully ask that if you have venom and malice to spread, find somewhere else. God bless.

This is what's wrong with the world we live in now - people can't just SUPPORT other people in times of need. Why is it that some people are focused on the fact that he had a private plane. If a commercial plane had gone down - would you be criticizing the people who went down with it? I hope not. My Mom always taught me - if you can't say anything nice - don't say anything at all. Some people need to keep their mouth shut! Pastor P has a heart for GOD - not money and we Bell Shoals Members know that. I pray that God softens your criticizing hearts!

When we first started going to Bell Shoals, I was surprised at how many ministries this church has and how many people it helps through them- not only locally but also nationally and world wide. It's not venom or malice,it's my comment freedom of speech,it is usually the "church goers" who are the first to place judgement on anyone, even their "churh goers" AND seriously, Bell Shoals is NOT a small church. A1Mom: What truth is that? That Bell Shoals spends more money in a day helping other people that you have likely spent in your lifetime? Just because a church is large, doesn't mean it is evil. Pastor Forrest is most generous with his funds and his time. This is what I meant by bigotry and malice. You slander a man you do not even know based on your own preconceived notions of the place he serves. I pray that your family never has to endure what the Pollack family is presently facing. It is a shame that you have chosen to focus on a fact that is completely immaterial to the tragedy at this time. You are right to say that you have freedom of speech; the sad fact is you appear to not possess either the compassion or perspicacity to understand when it is better to abrogate that right. Good luck and God bless.

CTPLR1- Why do you think that "God" blessed him with a plane but didn't bless him with safe travel on that same blessed plane? Seems kind of cruel and unlikely for a "God" to go around blessing people with modes of transportation only to turn a blind eye when they use them. I guess his followers should have been using superstitious rituals aka praying for him to arrive safely instead praying that he is found alive after his blessed God plane was hijacked by that old trickster Satan. Or, we can pretend we’re sane and see clearly that this man bought his own plane using his own money that he earned, which is ok, and he used it only to have an unfortunate accident while flying it because it isn’t blessed and nothing from man’s imagination aka God and the Devil was guiding his flight anywhere.

Hey Bill_H
When was the last time you read a bible any bible. It maybe true that this pastor is missing with his son but the Word of God (THE BIBLE )is the truth and we will have what we say when we believe. This is not the work of God.
Yes, it is true that he may allow things to happen. It is not his will for his children to be hurt in anyway. Someday you are going to pray out to God and you may not even know you are doing it, he will be there to help you. You see we are children of God and we choose (because of freewill) to turn from him. He will always be there for you. Maybe not in the selfish way you want him to be, he will be there. I truly will pray for salvation for you because you have no idea what life is with God. God is love, compassion, understanding, patient, nonjudgemental.
How many of those do you have. I pray that you come to an understanding of what God is and God does.

If not please keep your comments about his plane and other thig to your self. He never defrauded the church into buying him a plane. If you knew his past you would know that he was a very successful business man and made his money there. I have even heard from some other members in the church that he had said before that if it came to it he would do without getting paid by the church so others can be taken care of.

Diego, You might want to back off of your accusations, especially of me. You come off as pretty ill informed. If you think I am one of his "lemmings" you are very wrong. I grew up in this church (under a different pastor), and have heard Pastor Pollock speak on many occasions. His style of preaching wasn't for me, and so I looked elsewhere. However, I don't think any who actually knew him (or knew the true story behind him) would doubt his reasons for being a pastor.

I am as wary of the greedy pastors that are all over TV and in some churches as you are. But I assure you this was not the case with this man. He made his money as a very young entrepreneur. I assure you the salary he made from the church would not have paid for a private plane. He was a very talented man who made money elsewhere, then gave that up, to become a preacher. HE DID NOT MAKE HIS MONEY OFF RELIGION. He made in the communication industry when he was young.

It makes me sick to see all these nasty comments. From the comments from his church seems like this pastor was a good guy that has helped a lot of people. To people that are so heartless what goes around comes around.I hope that he and his son are found safely.

To those of you who feel the need to defend your pastor, let God vindicate him. He sounds like a wonderful man and if it was his time to meet his maker, then rest assure he's with the Lord. People will always criticize and talk about things they don't know of. If this pastor does pass on, he is in the hands of God. If he's still alive, I pray that he's found soon along with his son.

a1mom (and I pray that name is not a reference to how you view yourself and motherhood). Why is it that freedom of speech only works on way for you. You dish out, but you can't take it. If you are going to spew venum, expect that there will be comments in return. You want us as Christians to respond in a manner that is pleasing to you. Well I hate to tell you this, but YOU are not my standard. I have to answer to Someone much greater to you. The bible says to flee the presence of a fool. So I will end this post, but to the Bell Shoals family, my prayers are with Pastor Pollack, his family and all of you.

To both sides in the above issue (and I am sure Mr. Pollock would agree) you all need to read Matthew 7:1-2. Just remember where angry words when lightly spoken will lead = "Let your gentleness be known to all men."

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things.

The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

Please show some respect here. He is not the typical Pastor of a big church. Actually, he was a very successful businessman before becoming a Pastor. That is why he can afford his own private plane...he earned it the American Way -- through hard work. I know him through church, he conducted our marriage, and I have had business transactions with him. I also have personally witnessed his involvement in helping struggling families with their finances. He is real and very unlike those other religious leaders we hear about in the news. Again, please be respectful. My family's prayers are with him and his family.

This is a comment section of an on-line newspaper. If you want peace, solice, and a place for morning and well wishers - don't look here. It is truly a tragedy if the pastor and his son are indead found dead. But, there are many, many people on here who do not believe in God and don't need to be told by you people that they're wrong. I for one don't need you to tell to whom or how I should pray. Now, run along and be with friends and family of the church.... somewhere else.

It is amazing to think people actually believe that evil or satan could make his plan crash. If you believe in God then you must believe that everything happens for a reason- including death and accidents. In today's economy to think that this man made a fortune and still has money left with 6 kids to be able to buy a plane and fuel it and an SUV and not need a pay check from the church you are out of your mind. I have been to Bell Shoals were I was insultated and treated like a 3rd class citizen by many of its members- people who did not know me chose to judge me simply for my attire. Everyone is entitled to speak his/her mind. If you don't like what is being said here, then go to your church's website and chat there, do not expect others to say only what you want to hear.

How empty ones life must be to post such comments as have been posted today about such a tragic event. Is it not possible regardless of your beliefs to find within your heart compassion for the loss of your fellowman? Is it not possible to put your differences with the Christian faith aside long enough to remember above all else this man was some ones child, some ones husband, and a father. He was many things to many people and as so he deserves respect. While I have never attended Rev. Pollocks church my greatest friend does so each and every week, and she loves him dearly. At this time in my life I am struggling with my own beliefs in hopes of becoming a better person, and should I decide I am Christian I will wear the title proudly. I too offer my sympathy and my prayers to his wife, his children and all who loved him. I wish you comfort in believing that the path he chose in life led him to the front door of heaven, where he will be welcomed by God

A man and his son has lost their lives and no matter what your beliefs, show some respect to a person who tries to make a difference in other peoples lives. A lot of people fly planes and own their own plane, but the first conclusion is he is stealing money. Why couldn't he have just been a good preacher.
Just like now we stereotype all teachers are after their students. Well there are good pastors in this world and it sounds like this man was an exceptional one.
For some of you, please take your narrowed little minds and find other ways to amuse your selves.

i would just like to say a few words. if we can for just a momment put religion aside and simply look at what this man has done, he was young once and made some smart moves and made a lot of money. he then decided that he wanted more out of his life, he wanted to help people, sinse then he has fed mouthes that otherwise would not have been fed he has started organizations that have helped small countries prosper and for children whose parents could not afford it to seek medical attention, he has reached more lives and helped more people then any man i have ever met. if there was no religion involved here then im sure none of you would be crule about the fact that he purchased a plane with his own wealth and yes im sure the church doese help him to fuel it, but im pretty sure that cost less then a plane ticket these days, the man has worked hard for every thing that he has and the church is more the happy to help him put a little gass in his plane if it meens he can fly to another place and help just one more person, please stop accusing this great man of things that he is not guilty of, and just respect him for all the good that he has done for his fellow man. thatnk you, and his familly and church are in my prayers

I don't Jesus would be cruising around in a private plane these days. Read your silly bracelets, Christians, and try to really do what jesus would do.

Hey shirleyb42353,
Oh I read the "word". Went to church for 20 years. Was sent to bible school and religious camps. Then when I was older, I realized the book was written by men, changed by men, different books were removed from it, saw the condradictions, saw through the fairy tails and ridiculous stories, and on and on. I read where your god kills more people in the book than one can count, including innocent babies and children. God suppossedly set this whole thing up AND according to the book knows how it will end. Why would you pray for your god change things he has already made his mind up about? You worry about the devil, but god let him loose upon you. According to the book, he will defeat him in the future. Why not end the suffering now? Yes, he allowed this tragedy, hell he set it up.

To all that are concerned about his plane, house, car, etc., I'm sure that Dr. Pollock is looking down on us in sadness as he sees how many have yet to hear the good news. Just as our savior was innocently crucified for our sins to purchase a place in heaven for all who believed, you are mistaken about our pastor. To all the Christians out there, do not get angry because they do not see. Let's continue in Dr. Pollock's place and help remove the scales as he smiles down upon us from heaven!

People - this shouldn't be a religious discussion per sey. It is about a father and son that happen to be the pastor of a church. For those of you who don't believe in God, that is fine, but this isn't an open invitation to start bashing religion.

Whether or not you believe in God has NOTHING to do with having class! Those of you with the negitive comments are proving that you do not have any class what so ever. I don't know this man and his son from a whole in the ground, but I can be respectful, considerate and classy. That is all that these people want. There is another time for the negative talk.

My prayers are with this father, husband and pastor as well as his son.

Bell Shoals may be a "megachurch" by definition, but we are more accurately described as a large family. Today, we are faced with the prospect of carrying on after the loss of two of our family in such a sudden and tragic fashion. Pastor was not just our "pastor", but our friend and brother in Christ. His family will always be part of our fellowship and we will rally to their side to see them through this very terrible time. But, our family has a loving Father that will see all of us through this time of sorrow.

2 Corithians 5:5-9 says that Lord has prepared us for this very thing and that we are to be confident that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. We may never know how the taking-home of Pastor and his son will bring glory to the Lord until we are reunited in heaven. But we must also remember the words found in 1 Cor. 13:12-13 that says we will one day see things clearly and that our incomplete understand will be made complete in Glory.

I may never know how much Pastor has impacted my life until the Lord calls me home, but if pastor has made me a better man, father, husband and Christian through the teaching of the Word for the past few year... Then there are 1000's more that will have benefited and will continue to benefit from his ministry and example for years to come.

WSPA in SC is reporting 2 killed in crash, so it is true.

As for the silly poster who tries to convey the Jesus told his followers to give away earthly possessions, that is a load of crap. He told ONE person to do that because it was obvious the "things" were more important to him. That is not for everyone.

That said, I must also agree with "silly" poster because I see tons of WWJD wrist bands on the most irritating of people. And no...Jesus would not have had to take a plane...just walk over the water or whatever :>)

I will add this. I live in far south-western Virginia very, near NC northern boarder. It was WINDY yesterday and I noticed planes coming into our little airport in the area were flying VERY low trying to get to the runways.

Pilots not familiar with how the winds move in the Blue Ridge Mountains often find themselves being pushed down by those powerful downdrafts. Probably what occurred as they had no time to radio an SOS.

Sorry to hear about this loss, but I can promise you this man (if as wonderful as you all say) would not want you folks grieving long.

Why does some ones religion offend you so deeply, no one is asking you to believe, you are free to believe what you wish, just as you are free to post any derogatory comment you please. It is beyond my understanding why people such as you feel so threatened by others beliefs, you refer to comments of others as absurd, obviously you are not of the Christian faith, if it offends you why do you choose to participate. There are forums for debate on ones religious beliefs this is not the correct forum for such. There are people in here that had a relationship with this man, they loved him, they have their view of him, you and many others should have the common decency to allow these people to express their feelings without having to debate, of defend their religion. Their not here to do you harm, nor are they trying to influence your beliefs, can you not find enough goodness in you to leave them be.

Bill_H:
God does judge, but not for on a everyday basis! When something bad happens to a Christian, it is not God judging that person. With rare exception, God does not judge people in this life, but awaits the Day of Judgment to execute justice. This will make the point that God is not judging the sins of carnal Christians now, but that some Christians will indeed suffer loss, shame, and be “punished” at the Day of Judgment in the future. So he does judge us when that time comes! So all those that wish to sin, will be judged!

In reading the comments posted I am suprised at the negativity. I used to go to Bell Shoals and sat and spoke with the pastor on occassion. He, his wife and 6 kids were all kind. It wasn't a front because when you saw them in public they were the same people you saw in church.
Where is the compassion for a family who has just lost a husband/father, son/brother?
He flew a small plane just like my brother does. What does it matter if he had a plane? Nothing...
GOD is in control whether you like it or not. Forrest and his son are now in GOD's arms and praising HIM.
Life is a race to the finish and Forrest and his son have now finished their race and have won by entering heaven.
I am praying for each and every person that has posted a comment that one day your eyes will be opened to GOD's love and will realize the pain you have caused. Hopefully you will regret what you have said and repent.

As a minister's daughter, I will say this. My father left the ministry because (in his words) too much of it had nothing to do with the message Christ was teaching and more times than not, congregations didn't want to hear anything other than a few cute stories after 30 minutes of songs and announcements (and passing of the plate) so they could leave feeling better about themselves than they should. Too many put the pastor on a pedestal rather than allowing the pastor to encourage his congregation to take a hard look at themselves and notice they are not perfect and need LOTS of work.

I believe in a personal God, but have no use for the twisted way Christianity is taught today. I'll read my Bible, the "lost" books of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and (as the Bible teaches us to do) work out my OWN salvation, thank you.

I'll add this for diego_schmiago...from what I see in the church today (for the most part) I cannot understand why anyone TRULY seeking to better themselves in a spiritual way would be drawn to any church. Sorry, but I see the hypoc
