TAMPA - Edward Allen Covington told deputies he choked, beat, stabbed, dismembered and mutilated his girlfriend and her two children this weekend, Hillsborough County deputies say.
Covington was charged today with three counts of first-degree murder. He also faces three counts of abuse of dead human bodies, one count of cruelty to animals and one count of violating probation.
"It was a substantial amount of physical evidence linking Mr. Covington to the three deaths, as well as an admission on his part regarding his involvement in the deaths of the three victims," sheriff's office Chief Deputy Jose Docobo said at a press conference this afternoon. "No, he did not give a specific reason. No."
Authorities announced the arrest at a 4:30 p.m. news conference following the grisly slayings of Lisa Freiberg, 26, and her two children, Zachary, 7, and Heather Savannah, 2, at their Lutz home. The family dog, a white German shepherd, was also slain.
Their bodies were discovered Monday at the home on South Mobile Villa Drive.
The medical examiner's office is still investigating the cause of death, Docobo said. There were multiple means of inflicting the wounds.
Covington was found hiding in one of the children's closets and was taken to University Community Hospital after he told deputies he'd ingested an unknown substance.
Covington tested positive at the hospital for cocaine Monday, an arrest report states. He also told detectives he sold his motorcycle last week for crack cocaine.
"Without a doubt, it's one of the most horrific scenes that I've ever seen," Docobo said. "And the fact that it involved children, and the nature of the crime, has been very difficult for the investigators and everyone involved. It's absolutely horrific to have to deal with this type of crime.
"As you can imagine, the scene was so grisly that it would be impossible to be anywhere in that scene without being exposed to blood."
Covington was not Baker Acted after this weekend's incident, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
He was interviewedby detectives today when he was released from the hospital, Docobo said.
"He's provided extreme details as to the manner, the order and the means by which he committed these crimes," Docobo said.
The crimes appear to have been committed between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday and Covington appears to have stayed in the home, the arrest report states.
Covington didn't tell deputies what triggered the attack, Docobo said.
"It appears it was more spontaneous than any type of plan," he said.
Covington had marks on his body, but investigators aren't sure whether they are the result of the victims fighting back.
"He provided graphic details in what he did to the bodies, what he did to the victims," Docobo said. "We'll leave it at that."
Covington's father Ronnie, a detention deputy at Falkenburg Road Jail, had "no involvement and no knowledge of this crime," Docobo said.
If Ronnie Covington needs support from the sheriff's office, he will receive it, Docobo said.
Lisa Freiberg's mother found her daughter and grandchildren dead Monday after becoming concerned she hadn't heard from Freiberg on Mother's Day.
Sheriff David Gee said Tuesday that the mother and two children are thought to have been killed early Sunday morning. According to a driver's license issued April 28, Covington lives at Freiberg's address.
Covington has 27 friends on his MySpace page, and most are women. One of his friends is Terry Bollea, also known as Hulk Hogan. It's not immediately clear whether he knows Bollea.
Pictures of Covington with what he calls his 2001 Yamaha R6 motorcycle and with his friends at a San Antonio, Fla., bar also are on the page.
Covington last logged in April 24. He said he graduated in 1990 from Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville. He listed his occupation as an electrician.
"You'll never become old and wise if you're not young and crazy," a quote on his MySpace page states.

Let me guess: the boyfriend did it . . . but he's going to plead insanity and won't have to pay in the manner he deserves to pay. I admit, someone must really be sick to be able to do something like this, BUT I certainly don't think that is an excuse, and they should have to pay for what they did. "Insanity" as an excuse, well, that's just insane.

This is no surprise as far as what Covington did. The fact he mutilated before shows his inclination. Would be interested in his background to see how his parents screwed him up so much.
As for the woman and children, this is about as tragic as you can get. Should never have happened. She was overly niave to allow a guy she meets on the Internet to come live with herself and her kids...and I don't care how long they chatted. She unknowingly put her whole family in the line of fire.

To the person who made a statement about his parents: I know the family very well. They are dear friends of mine and have been so for years. I can honestly say that these are two of the most quality people I have ever known. I Strongly believe that their raising of him had absolutely nothing to do with messing him up. These people have done more than they needed to to help him out. Far more than any parent should have to do. They had nothing to do with him turning into this.

So many of the horrible stories in the news lately that end in death, molestation, etc. sadly have one thing in common; Internet meetings.
Trusting an individual on the net is no smarter than going home with someone met on the street or in a bar for the first time, maybe even less wise as you dont know who you really are communicating with.
Now another lovely young woman and two more innocent children will be buried.
I do not agree with supernanny80's feelings about doing away with this monster quickly. There is a reason these sickos want the death penalty. They know what awaits them inside. Putting them in general population, not isolation, is a fate worse than a quick death for these "people". Money well spent as far as I am concerned.

The absolute worst thing a bipolar can do is ingest cocaine. Cocaine itself induces paranoia and schizophrenia. Add that to someone who already has mania and you have a recipe for murder. I don't think you can excuse someone from the death penalty that abused drugs to incite mental illness. Otherwise, bipolar is a very manageable disease. He did it to himself. I hope he gets the death penalty.

Just wanted all of the posters here to know that he will be found criminally insane. Duh. You would have to be insane to do this. I just hope that Hillsboro did their job in questioning him correctly, not like the idiots who questioned Onstott (or however his name is spelled). This psycho needs to studied. He needs to be poked and prodded so that we can find out what makes him so sick. We need to find out what went wrong so that we can identify anyone else like him and exterminate them before they hurt anyone. Once we get all the data we can out of this monster then we put the needle to him. Not a minute before hand. If he is going to sit on death row he may as well do the rest of society some good by being a good lab rat and succumb to the testing needed to figure him out.

Petey90, you are right in that he is to blame, not the family. But children 100% of the time are somehow a physical and psychological combination of both parents. Percentage of good or bad varies between sibling and I don't understand that myself.
I'll give this...it is equally possible that whatever bothered Edward Convington in his concious or memory so badly that it "ate him alive" may have been a very, innocent mistake on the parents' part. Like the woman he killed...really poor judgement to bring someone into the home met on the INternet where people are known to pretend to be what they are not.
Let me explain further. Maybe he would overhear his dad talking to his mom about what the really bad prisoners did to get into jail and it tramautized him. Or possibly he experienced ongoing bullying in school and his parents didn't realize how badly it got to him.
Based on the fact you appear emotional over the issue, I believe you (a) either do know the family, or (b) have had a "bad situation" in your life that makes you sensitive to this type of thing.
Hope that clears up my thinking on this.

Once again, GATORMOM, if you would properly do your research before spouting off your anti police propaganda, know this!!! He was baker acted by T.P.D. for his mental instability and was charged by T.P.D. for the animal cruelty charges, not HCSO. Police officers only charge suspects with crimes. The State Attorneys Office aka MARK OBER did not file on charges. However, if you feel the need to point fingers in your perfect world, point them at the suspect. By the way, the next time you need a "good ole' boy," from HCSO, TPD, FHP, and let us not forget the firefighters HCFR. Remember what you said about the "good ole' boys."

The police department will give support to Covington's father Ronnie but what about family members of the victims like the poor mother who found her daughter and grandchildren in that way? I am sure she will have to pay for any psychological help she seeks which could never help what she saw. That poor woman. No mention of supporting her. Ronnie Covington did not lose a son to such violence and I don't think the county should fit the bill for that. I'm sorry but he is not a victim in the sense that first they should help the family of the victim. Also if I had been the police he would have not been taken to the hospital. Let that vile excuse for a human being die. Hopefully he will soon either by the state or someone in the jail. God bless whoever does it.

No more Sparky unless they ask for it and I doubt that he will. The POS that murdered my stepdaughter has been on death row for approximately 9 years and we are still on the 1st step of the appeal process with around 3 or 4 to go. I still believe in the death penalty but believe me it is a very long and heart wrenching process. I pray that the family will eventually come to terms with this but you never have closure.

DrexManning...I was speaking of the issue at hand. I would say JDV was getting off the subject. He is accusing the LE community of giving the suspect a break and possibly letting him off scott free. I believe the topic at hand was about the terrible crime committed by Covington. I guess both of you need to get a clue now. Oh wait, just have another beer instead!

He'll not get life, it will be death. What he did to those kids makes me and everyone making comment sick. This makes me think of John Cowey, and what he did to Jessie Lunford, and how he tried to act like he was retarded or crazy, drawing pictures in court. This don't work when children die. He will be sitting on death row with John Cowey, waiting his turn for death, like all the other sick S.O.B that harm and kill children. We the public will stand for nothing less.We all need to protect our kids because they can't protect their selfs.....

Now we all know what the face of evil looks like. He admitted to what he did. No trial, no jury, just take him out of this world. Let some of the good 'ol boys take him out and do to him what he did to his victims.

Forget the electric chair or lethal injection.. give him death by Cresswood HF-70A. Low speed/ high torque should be the way for this scumbag to go.

I knew Lisa and her family. I went to school with her. A sweet, young beautiful woman with a heart of gold. Yes, she may have met this monster on the internet but, saying that she put her family in the line of fire, is basically saying, that she deserved what happened to her and that he should be let go. I know more of the details than what is being said and they should do to this SOB exactly what he did to these Angels. My prayers are with the family forever. This is such a tragic loss to deal with.

"Covington has 27 friends on his MySpace page, and most are women. One of his friends is Terry Bollea, also known as Hulk Hogan. It's not immediately clear whether he knows Bollea."
Where does this factor in? I dont get it. I have celeb's on my myspace. What does that mean?
Are they trying to say The Hulk had somthing to do with this? I mean really, there is no point in adding that comment in there.

I am guessing the Hulk link is only because of the Nick bollea story....
that is just narrow minded coincidence.
TBO.com...
gotta tell ya your forum links are really antiquated.
You have one story with several articles of the same context and ALL of the forum threads diverse into too many direction's.
I am guessing your web designer graduated from DeVry...
come on man...shape up
