DADE CITY - Two Mexican nationals were gunned down Friday night in the Tommy Town neighborhood north of Dade City, and detectives are trying to figure out what the motive was.
"We're definitely looking at a double homicide, but we're trying to learn what led up to the shootings," Pasco County Sheriff's Office spokesman Doug Tobin said Saturday afternoon.
Tommy Town, where the county is paving streets as part of an urban renewal project, is home to many hardworking immigrant families, Tobin said.
"Usually, when there is a Tommy Town shooting, people come forward with tips," Tobin said. In this case, detectives are concerned that any witnesses may be afraid to talk to them because of their immigration status, he said.
"Hopefully, somebody knows something," Tobin said. "We want to solve this crime rather than investigate any immigration issues."
The victims of Friday night's shootings near the intersection of Meredith and Hutchinson streets were identified Saturday as Santos De La Cruz, 33, and Quirino Velasquez, 46.
Deputies responding to a 9:57 p.m. call about a shooting found the two men lying in Hutchinson Street with gunshot wounds.
A relative of the two men who went to the scene told deputies the men were roommates and lived at 14860 17th St., Apt. 8, in Dade City, Tobin said. The sheriff's office reported that the two men were citizens of Mexico.
The relative said the two men were going to the store together and never came back.
Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call the Pasco sheriff's office at (727) 844-7711.
