TAMPA - Busch Gardens' new Jungala exhibit was shut down about 6:30 p.m. Saturday after a female orangutan scaled the exhibit and had to be guided to a safe area.
The Bornean orangutan climbed the windows of the 12-foot viewing structure and never had contact with guests, who were evacuated immediately, said Glenn Young, vice president of zoological operations at the theme park.
"All orangutans have different personalities, but this one, who is 10 years old and 85 pounds ... was calm throughout the incident."
Caretakers used treats to lure the animal into its night quarters, where it will remain with other orangutans until problems with the exhibit are resolved, Young said.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also will investigate.
Human error is not to blame, Young said.
